    Modern power cat Trawler?

Sweet! I didn’t know Thailand has a shipbuilding industry. Those both look great. Yep, they’re a US builder in a highly regulated state, I’m sure they use vacuum bagging because anything else would be illegal.... and with catamarans you pay for both hulls.

    Modern power cat Trawler?

That’s my concern about the proa design. The Aspen C20 is around 40 feet, but is one king and one bathroom and a single.... meanwhile an Aquila 36 day boat has two doubles and two bathrooms. Hopefully with the 50 the pros will be wide enough that it’s less relevant that it’s smaller. Maybe two...

    Modern power cat Trawler?

Sweet! I’ve been to your blog in the past, jealous of your boat. Interestingly the Sunreef 70 i think you’re talking about in your first article is two redesigns ago- recently they had the “Supreme 68” and then last year introduced the 80 (of which a 70 and 60 design are created and being...

    Modern power cat Trawler?

I was just giving my understanding of the current power cat market which seems to be moving away from “Trawler Cats” like the endeavor and journey and towards “charter condos”. What’s your boat?

    Modern power cat Trawler?

I’m thinking a used Aspen C90 or C105 might be a good first powerboat, before upgrading to something big and much more expensive, like their 50 footer. I can’t wait to see it. What made you decide to go a different way?

What happened to the Swift Trawler?

You think the new ones are improved?

    Modern power cat Trawler?

Recently been looking at catamarans designed to be charter condos in the Caribbean and going back and forth between them and Trawlers. I’m wanting to cruise up and down the west coast, as far as the Homer Spit in AK, and as far south as maybe the Panama Canal. (Might get tired of snow and want...

What happened to the Swift Trawler?

I was keen on these boats, but on sidelines, then the last two models they released don’t look like “Trawlers”. Like they redesigned them to be more sport boats. I’m not going to make specific claims, because it’s not one thing, but I’m wondering if Swift owners agree. What do you think if the...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

Is there anyone still making a modern pilothouse like the Cherubini? Any of them with a modern plant like the Volvo IPS? The Swift Trawler and others are similar, but I’m talking about where the cabin is the full beam, like the Cherubini Independence and the pilot house is narrower with a side...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

Good points... the thinking though with the Macgregor is that 80 miles is 2 hours at 40 knots, so you could pick your weather and go fast.... though I’ve only seen it in powerboat mode on lakes. Hmm. Unfortunately a whole lot of boat makers on the smaller dude got wiped out in the past...

Literally this is what I was suggesting the Macgregor for, and you used it as an excuse to dishonestly characterize me. I guess discussing different possibilities is too much for you to handle. Whatever, you’re not trying to help, so I don’t care to hear from you further. Bye!

Did you look at my list? None of them have fly bridges though some come in versions with flybridges. A fly ridge won’t fit under the bridge clearances in the great loop. All of the ones on the list are fast enough, only the Krogan I think won’t do 20 knots. At the start of this thread I had no...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

Ranger Tugs are kinda nice. I like you can get one with an outboard. One of the challenges is almost all the reasonable sized boats (and even too many big boats) are designed for weekend use at longest. With the Macgregor, which is also even less equipped than a ranger, I would equip it with...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

Ultimately I want a boat good for Seattle to Homer cruising in the summer. Before doing that more serious cruising, I plan to spend some time in Florida and eventually do the great loop. I attempted to remove money from the equation. A boat costing $1M now will be $500k in 5-6 years, even...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

I have no idea if I’ll do it more than once. I’m going into semi-retirement so I have lots of time. It seems Florida and the Caribbean have lots of great cruising, and also Alaska too. I know I want to do both and the great loop. But for the great loop maybe I should just buy a Macgregor 26X...

    Cored Hull Underwater

I would too. I’m glad you mentioned sleep quality, because that’s what this is really all about. It’s psychological. There are so many variables, not just in production practices but in the experience the boat has had. The fact water damage can be hidden in fiberglass emphasizes the...

    Cored Hull Underwater

The video mentions they use other materials, besides fiberglass and balsa for strengthening. It’s not a kerf they showed, and elsewhere it has been claimed they are perforated. Given that plastic foam is relatively inexpensive there must be some reason for choosing balsa instead. I don’t...

    Cored Hull Underwater

Benneteau isn’t following the 1970s era techniques. In fact one of the advantages of a large producer like this is they can optimize and use modern techniques and technology. My understanding of their process: - they are using vacuum bagged infusion - the balsa is perforated to support resin...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

I should add, my budget is flexible but I’m targeting boats that sell today for around $1M-$1.5M, assuming that in 2023 the 2019 built boat will have lost %30 of it’s value or more. A better approach might be to buy something small in the $100k range sooner and spend time on it then trade up...

Migrating from a sailboat to a motor yacht or trawler. Much confusion.

Greetings all- — I wrote a long post but buried the main question which is this: is there a boat that’s practical to sail the great loop with (bridge clearance 15’) but that can also sail Seattle to Homer AK in the summers? AND can be moved from Miami to San Diego or Seattle cost effectively...
