Air Cooled, Enclosed, Marine Gen Sets

I run a Honda 3000i on my trailerable houseboat. I'm thinking its over 15 years old now with only plug and oil changes. While on the road we usually run the generator all night for a/c (in Walmart parking lots). On the water it is fired up before we splash and turned off after she's back on the...

    Thought I bought a trawler!

I had a trawler. Then I had a houseboat. The difference between a coastal trawler and houseboat is immense maintenance and of course status...neither of which was a priority for us.

    *Blue Water* Bahama cruising?

A coastal cruiser on their first trip across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas will see Blue Water. When they return to the coast, they will have been a blue water cruiser to anyone not having a similar experience. A 'blue water boat' is defined by the ratio of adventure to safety.

    Generator question

My microwave doesn't like my Xantrex inverter. We start the generator before we start the boat engine. I agree with solar as a 'backup. I hate tiptoeing around electric usage. Might consider a remote start Champion inverter generator instead of a Honda - I have both and like the Champion better.

Does a trawler have weather and motion issues like a sailboat?

I'm not so good with numbers or techniques, but I can relate personal experience. In our 20's my wife and I decided we wanted to live aboard a sailboat. We did, for 3 years, sailing from New England to the Caribbean. We probably ran the sailboat motor for over 60% of the water miles we...

Child dies of CO poisoning while on back of small boat

A boat can suck up exhaust even if it's a thru hub outboard. When I had my cuddy cabin I found the exhaust unbearable at low speeds...but I found a solution. I hung a flap of Sunbrella straight down off the back of the Bimini top. We had a CO detector in the cockpit which had a readout so we...

Trawler wanna-be: What are fuel burn rates

Houseboat, not a trawler...9000 lbs 28' 2.5mpg @ 7 mph. 350 Chevy gasser with 30 mph potential. Less than 3k to replace entire engine when it 'wears out'.

    Flushing Holding Tank at Sea

Despite her title, Peggy is a classy lady. Here's a true story. Back in the day before Facebook, we had 'Newsgroups' which were text only. One day there was a post about a boat get-together on Lake Lanier in GA. I went - there was 6 or 7 other boats, one of which was named Solitare, piloted...

    Protecting the dog

Oh, and here's where us rednecks have an advantage. Our dog doesn't wear a harness or life jacket. He's allowed to come and go as he pleases while we're at anchor. In fact, he'll even swim ashore and back on his own to go potty.

What is Idle Speed in a "No Wake" Zone?

I got stopped by a water cop doing 5 1/2 mph in my 16' boat in a No Wake Zone. The cop said no wake means no white water from bow or stern. We did a test and that was 4 mph for me in his waters. This means I could get a ticket at anchor in a 5 mph current?
