Best cellular carrier in the PNW

Verizon... From my time in the Pacific Northwest, Verizon worked very well. We used to lay our tracks from Everett to San Diego about 50 nm off the coast and had coverage the entire way down and back, save for a few dead spots. We called it the "Cell Phone Track". I have T-Mobile, but anything...

    Odd questions from Canada Customs

Funny, I have an old Navy buddy who is employed with CBP at Blaine... Would you like his number?

    Odd questions from Canada Customs

Assuming this is true, then similar to NLETS (law enforcement database) or similar, we must contend with the reality that an international database exists, of sorts... And what to do about it? Given that the Internet is distributed, and thus, fault tolerant, it would seem recourse is difficult...

    Odd questions from Canada Customs

It is a PITA as it is PERCEIVED AS EASY, and thus, a "soft point"... You cover your base with assessed risks.

    Odd questions from Canada Customs

"Honest Signals"... As someone who used to do this for a living, for those of you who suggested that "80% of communication is non-verbal", BINGO. What we are looking for are called "indicators". You ever hear of those speed dating competitions, where, in 5 minutes, a woman knows if she is...

    Steel hull repair

And I second this BIG TIME! The OP did things correctly and did not "half *ss" the inspection...

    Steel hull repair

If the OP would not mind, I suggest this illustrates the positive aspects of a steel hull... Namely, a relatively straight forward repair/re-plate. I work with steel and while unfortunately, likely owing to current economics, the repair would be significant in cost, the idea of plating with a...

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

We were based out of Seattle... Typically making trips South for operations off the Mexican coast, so no, we were not in the vicinity of Alaska or similar... We had survival time tables on the bridge for various conditions, I never wanted to fall overboard in that water...

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

When I was working aboard ship in the Pacific Northwest, our survival tables gave 30 minutes in that water...

    Marine binocular recommendations???

Ironically, after a little more poking around, I settled on a pair of 7X50 Bushnell's with the "pesky" compass I want, ruggedized (rubber body) and at a reasonable price... If there is any serious chop, I shouldn't be on the water given my rather meager boat!

    Marine binocular recommendations???

I took a look at the image stabilized binos from Fujinon, they are within my budget, but they do not come with a compass and require a battery, which of course gives me some concern, because the battery will either die at the least opportune moment, or be dead 5 minutes after I push out. I used...

    Marine binocular recommendations???

Thank you for the help, yes, the Hooway brand was the item I was considering. I really don't need the range finder (I used to use a stadimeter, no joke!), but I love having a compass bearing when I am looking at something. I almost forgot the "Steiner" brand, probably top of the line, but very...

    Marine binocular recommendations???

Just a question, what recommendation do folks here have for marine binoculars? I mean, we all know Fujinon ($$$$) and Bushnell ($$$) are probably the "Icing on the Cake", but I see great reviews for some of the Chinese binos with built in compass and range finder. I remember circa 2000...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

Just use a "cheater" lens, that's what I do. Cost me $5 at Matheson, fits against the hood lens (inside). Works great!

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

Bugaboo, Everlast has some great equipment, the brand has been around for a while, and the higher end units have impressive duty cycles. They were some of the first inverter welders commonly available on the market I read about, I almost bought one. I am surprised you did not "bird nest" when...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

Just to clarify my post as it was confusing even to me... The MIG puts out 280 amps at 40 volts (open circuit), thus 11,200 watts. A 60 amp circuit on 240 can handle a max of 14,000 watts. Breakers typically trip at around 80% of their rated capacity (at least that's what the electricians tell...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

For whatever run you want (for 220/240), to a shop, whatever, just make sure your voltage drop is less than 3%. I believe the rule is 5%, for some reason 3% sticks out in my mind, that is what I used.... This is to determine the cable size. Here is a link to the one I use...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

See if there is a community college in your area that offers welding classes, this is a GREAT way to learn and get experience with serious equipment so you can decide what equipment to buy. Since you will be welding aluminum, you WILL need a 200 amp machine, and I would highly suggest going as...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

You can use your dryer outlet with a appropriate sized extension cord (10 AWG), it is most likely a 30 amp circuit which will be somewhat limiting... I have a 60 amp circuit for my welder on 240 volts, but I have a large machine with a max of 280 amps, I doubt I will ever need to weld 1/2"...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

If the part is mailable, you can send it to me and I will MIG it for you... And given that it will be MIG, no, it might not be as pretty as a TIG weld, but it might work. You can PM me...

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

Then you were doing micro miniature repair as we called it, no wonder you are great at TIG! There is no way I could do that, I had co-workers who did it and I never envied them... I think where many folks run into problems with stick are with the 6011/6010 electrodes, using whip and pause. I...
