    Series or Parallel Solar Panels

You would likely get better performance from 2 controllers, one for each side. But the improvement may not be enough when looking at cost/benefit. For such relatively low wattage panels series on each side will be best to increase voltage, and thus reduce voltage drop. On my system i run...

LifePo4 in the engine room. Heat considerations?

My LFP's are in the ER. The spec says do not charge them if above 122°F. I put a batt temp monitor next to them and during the last 12 months they have not been above 115. I have not run the engines hard, and seldom need too, on hot days. If the ER temp is getting up then I can leave the...

Depth sounder offset. True or depth beneath keel????

My Furuno video sounder is old, simply shows depth below transducer. The 'ducer is 1m below the waterline. On the TZ screen I display water depth using a 1m offset. I look at both readings about the same amount of time. As to keel, its 0.3m below the 'ducer. I just pay close attention when...

    MAN i6

I agrre that checking with MAN is best. But as I recall for my John Deere's the dealer advised that provided I completed the run-in correctly, then I could operate at low rpm after that if I wanted too. Their run-in procedure was a special oil, and varying power frequently but typically 60-80%...

    Required Insurance at PNW marinas

I'm surprised it has been so low until now. Typically Public Liability is $10m here as part of regular comprehensive boat insurance, and some yards want $20m coverage before they will haul you out.

    Vacuflush, lucky repair

I have two Vacuflush heads, and a few days ago one would not flush.. Motor would not turn on. I suspected the vacuum pressure switch was the most likely culrprit. Sometimes there is an advantage to having two of something. It wasn't practical to swap the entire switch assembly, but I was able...

Wet exhaust tail pipe flappers…pros and cons?

I checked my spreadsheet tabulation of invoices before posting, and unfortunately there are no brand details. And yes, my rubber flappers have some curl, but they would still stop a wave from behind at anchor. Underway the exhaust pressure might keep the flap partly open.

Wet exhaust tail pipe flappers…pros and cons?

I have a high riser before the water injection point. a water lift muffler, a check valve unit and finally rubber exhaust flappers. It is a good system design by Port Townsend Shipwright's CoOp. Flappers should be regarded as an add on, not the key element for preventing issues from surge etc

    Lithium Ion Tool Battery Fires

My theory on the fires is that they are associated with el cheapo tools etc. Quality tools come with quality, smart chargers that turn off completely once the battery is fully charged. My ebike is Trek and does that. Tools are Makita or Milwaukee which seem to do similar although the green...

Loss of SV Rum Truffle, Bahia del Sol bar, El Salvador

Something I have not seen discussed so far is the tidal range. Attached is the chart for La Libertad, likely to be quite similar to Bahia del Sol. On inspection you will see that high tide on 13 Mar at 5:09PM IS 2.5M. A week later, 20 Mar high is at 11:26am and is 1.5m. So, with a 1m...

Slow Hand – End of the line

May the sale go smoothly and wishing you all the best for the next chapter in your life. Last year I was wondering how much longer I could cruise for. Then I had a total knee replacement and regained a lot of mobility, so hopefully now I've got quite a few more years to go.

Solar Panel Integrity when not in use

Flexible panels probably will benefit, as they have plastic and not glass over the solar cells, and plastic loses transparency as noted above. For hard panels, I have often wondered whether sitting at the dock on shorepower and thus having nowhere for the solar output to go degrades them. I...

PNW to Mexico, Panama Canal, and Florida, on our way at last!

Glad to hear you got out ok and in time to meet your canal transit booking. Like everyone, I share your feelings about Mark's misfortune. In looking at Google maps, I cant help but wonder why the two seemingly decent commercial shipping ports aren't used as stopovers? Acajutla in the north...

    Buying boat with Volvo TMD40A's

And I cant imagine Volvo parts will get any cheaper or more easily available in that time either. My first thought was find a pair of running take-outs (anything but Volvo) and fit them. But the changeover could cost the price of one new engine if you have a yard do it for you. The other red...

I think we are too high at the bow.

I'd suggest putting a spirit level on the sole of one or more of the cabins, oriented fore-aft. That will be definitive, ideally you want it close to being level. If the bow is high then a heavier anchor and more chain would be a good solution. Even if the bow looks high when the sole is...

    Interesting boats
