$20 to dock your dinghy for dinner.

That definitely seems exorbitant to me!

    Air Conditioning

Our M/S Mediterranean has an old MarineAire unit in the aft beth that is dead. After much research, we will be going back with a new MarineAire MSBA Integra. These come with integral pressure gauges so you can see what's going on without having to drag a set of gauges out and try to get to the...

    Locking out carburetor secondaries

Quadrajets are almost always tuned wrong and one of the settings that's misadjusted 90+% if the time is the secondary spring tension. This is what causes the world famous Quadrajet bog when accelerating quickly. Basically, when you open the throttles far enough the bottom butterflies open...

    No steering!

Mine is definitely not the high pressure system as the gauge only goes to 69 psi. It is a 3-line system. I'm going back this weekend and we're staying on the boat so I'll have more time to mess with it. It's just strange that it works and quits as soon as we're under way, I'm assuming due to...

    No steering!

    That's good to know, thanks!

    How to determine your limits...

When I started out as an apprentice mechanic the best piece of advice that I ever got was "If you can figure out how it works, you can fix it". Now a little mechanical knowledge and "feel" is pretty important but always look at any project as an exercise in not only the original repair, but also...

    No steering!

No sir, no autopilot. The good thing is it's only a single helm so there's one less thing to worry about. Think we're going to go camp on her this weekend so I'll have more time to play with it.

    No steering!

Well, it lost steering again twice today. It had steering wheel we climbed aboard but as soon as I tried to start while under way, it went to nothing. We anchored in a cove and I looked at the reservoir gauge, which showed 17-18 lbs. I bumped it to 20 even and it felt ok again. Under way it lost...

    No steering!

Hey Rich, yeah we've got a gauge on the boat for rudder angle.

    No steering!

Thanks guys, it's working after re-pressuring the system. Didn't have to add any fluid and have found no leaks anywhere, but it hasn't been used at all in over two years sitting through 100+ deg Texas summers plus the great freeze this last winter that almost sunk several boats at our marina, so...

    No steering!

Good to know! I've got nearly 40 yrs on automotive steering systems but this is my first boat with hydraulics other than outboards.

Starting a long dormant diesel engine

Unless the injectors or glow plugs are easily accessible and easy to get out, I generally prefer the Stabil fogging oil sprayed in through the intake. Don't get crazy and hydro lock it, just enough to coat the cyl walls, intake valve stems, etc. Used to rehab a bunch of old industrial stuff and...

    No steering!

I had to go back out there yesterday to repack the stuffing boxes and found the reservoir in the aft bilge. Had my portable air tank with me and aired it up a bit( couldn't see the gauge markings real well but looked like 15-20 psi and it started working almost instantly. Still feels a little...

    No steering!

That's the next step but we ran out of time by the time I got her back in the slip. It will probably be next weekend before I can get back out there. Just seems strange that there's no lock or pressure at all when turning. I can literally spin the wheel with one finger and it will keep spinning...

    No steering!

Well, we took the new to us 41' Mainship Mediterranean out for her maiden voyage this afternoon. Not having any experience with power steering on a boat I wasn't sure how much pressure there should be, but thought well maybe it's just really light until we're under way. Had my grandson cast off...

    Quiet but reliable bilge blower

I ended up purchasing one from Chillout Systems and so far couldn't be happier. Once I got seriously into the bilge areas I discovered that this boat actually has a total of four bilge blowers. There are two in the aft bilge where the original Genny is and two more in the engine room. This...

Do it my way, or no way at all attitudes...

It's not just boating. I commented on a video where a young lady was sitting the cylinder head on a V-8 engine. As a long time automotive tech, I shared a little trick of using two rocker arms on the studs as handles to easier handle the head. Next thing I know guys are calling me a hack and a...

USCG documentation vs. Tx titling, Help!

Got the call today that the documentation is just pending a notarized Bill of Sale to complete and he's FedEx'ed it to the previous owner to sign. The ball should be in my court within a week or so hopefully!

    Sliding door locks

Thanks. That's not what it had, but that might be an option for replacement. I think I may have found some that will work, but I need to go look at the doors again. I'm waiting on the documentation to get handled and the boat is 100 mi. away.

    Quiet but reliable bilge blower

The boat is equipped with spark arrestors and I am aware of the blower guidelines, although I may wire in a timer circuit so that the engines and generator won't start without a minimum blower run time. You are correct about the fuel consumption, if we decide it's worth keeping I will probably...

    Quiet but reliable bilge blower

OK, this sort of got sidetracked so here's the situation. I'm not currently doing any work on the boat until it's in my name, but I AM planning out what needs to be done. I've spent 25+ yrs as an automotive master tech so the fuel leaks are just a minor annoyance at this point, I just want the...

    What in tarnation?

That a platform for Jack and Rose to clown around on where they won't block the Captain's view while underway.

    Sliding door locks

Does anyone know what type of door locks were used on the 88-89 Mediterranean sliding side doors? It appears that after the doors are closed, some sort of small diameter (1/4"-3/8" max)pin was pushed in to extend into a hole in the edge of the door opening. The locks themselves are gone, but...

    Quiet but reliable bilge blower

Luckily we don't have to do actual sea trials because ours is on a landlocked lake in N. Central Texas. It hasn't been driven in a couple of years but is in pretty decent shape from being in a covered slip the whole time.
