Does a weekend live aboard make sense?

Late to chime in, but just want to let you know that this is pretty much exactly how we use our Nordic Tug 32/34. We spend the week in our condo in the city, and most weekends on the boat (friday evening or saturday morning through sunday). We also stay on it over some holiday weekends. We...

    Your favorite, non-tippy deck chair

We have two of the Pico chairs on Carolena, plus a couple folding cushions for when we need more outside seating. No need for an outside table for us, as we store our large cooler on the upper deck and use it as a table when sitting up there. When not in use, the folded chairs fit in one of...

    Northern Lights Raw Water Pump

FYI - we replaced the raw water pump on our NL generator a few months ago. From what I could tell, it looks like JMP supplies the pump for NL on our genny. We went with the JMP and the only difference I could see looking at the pump was no NL logo embossed in the impeller cover plate. We...

    Cold weather bedding

Does anyone have a suggestion for a heated mattress pad that would work for a v-berth? Ours is about the width of a king, but because of the v shape we cannot tuck the edges of the pad around the mattress. We would need something that will lay on top of the mattress.

    Rigid or inflatable SUP?

Lots of good advice here. We've had inflatables for around eight years (on our second) and I'll add two more points. First, the inflatables can be left in the water tied to the boat and you don't need to worry about it hitting the boat. A hard board can get chipped and can also chip the boat...

    "Cheap" electronics

We got a great deal on a prior year model 14 inch Raymarine MFD directly on the Raymarine website. I'm not sure if other companies sell old models that way, but may be worth looking.

    Boat Wiring and Onboard Heaters

Those should work just fine for you. We use ours in northern Virginia until the water gets below 40 degrees, which is usually around mid to late December. Below 40 the units will freeze up and stop heating. As others have noted, they reverse cycle heat pumps will throw a lot more heat using...

    Furuno radar

BTW, forgot to add, we considered getting a newer touch screen Furuno rather than repair our unit, but it turns out the newer screens are made for digital radar and are not compatible with the older models. Our MFD is an RDP-139.

    Furuno radar

Not sure what you mean by upgrade the screen, but we recently had our Furuno screen repaired by Hyde Marine Instrumentation in Gloucester VA. Hyde Marine Instrumentation - Home The owner, Chuck Hyde, was a pleasure to deal with. We thought we would need a new screen, but he was able to repair...

    WI FI unlimited?

One inexpensive option that may work for some is the hotspot we just started using through Ting wireless. They offer a hotspot on the Sprint network for $25 per month for 30 gigs. We have lousy wifi at our marina and we have a wifi camera on the boat, so the hotspot function on our phones...

Does Nordic Tugs have a web site?

I asked about the website on one of the owners forums and the response is that Nordic Tug has been having issues with their web provider that should be sorted out soon.

    Heavy Battery Removal

We did the same a couple weekends ago. Had to replace the 4d start battery (house bank is made up of golf cart batteries). The battery box sits on a shelf in the ER with out much overhead clearance - just enough for the battery with about three inches to spare. I tied thick docklines to each...

Folding seat like a director's chair?

Not exactly what you are looking for, but if small storage is a priority, these things fold up to the size of a large laptop. We have two in the Tug that we use in the cockpit, upper deck and sometimes in the cabin depending on needs. They have rubber/silicone pads on the bottom so wont...

    A Leak!

Had a similar experience with our PSS seal. The clamp on the bellows had become loose, causing it to turn which put a crimp in the cooling line. We noticed it because we could smell what seemed like plastic burning - you access our shaft log through a hatch in the saloon. We were able to...

    Repainting black window frames

Sorry, meant to actually post this link, which is specific to anodized windows (though the other one also has good information for refinishing aluminum): https://www.sentoa.org/maintenance_tips/window_painting.html

    Repainting black window frames

Sounds like you already started, but if not, here is a write up on the process that Diamond Seaglaze recommends. It comes from the Southeast Nordic Tug Owners Association: https://www.sentoa.org/maintenance_tips/dsg_door_repainting.html Several other interesting project write-ups on the site...

    soldboats

For future reference, you can get the average selling price for free from BoatUS if you are a member. It is one of the services they offer. We used it both when pricing our last boat for sale (we did not use a broker), and before putting in an offer on our current boat. They won't give you...

    Own or lease your slip?

We started out leasing at our condo marina (from an individual owner), then wound up buying when our landlord offered a price we couldn't walk away from. Pluses - no annual lease negotiations, a say in all board matters, and lower overall costs (though you do have principal tied up in the...

To have or not to have a pilothouse?

We have a smaller boat (34.5 FT overall) with a pilot house, and we cannot see ever having another boat without one. While it does take up some space from the saloon, it is also a separate room we use all the time - for piloting, of course, but also to enjoy the view while having coffee at...

    Home vs Boat

This is exactly our plan when we retire. Larger boat to travel but a small condo with no maintenance in a low tax state (probably NH or FL) as our home base and to store our things. Yes, you pay for no maintenance through fees, but in return you get more time. Once we get tired or are...

    Home vs Boat

One more consideration to add to the conversation - if you have a house with a mortgage, odds are that it is at a much lower rate than you will get on a boat loan, more so if the home mortgage is a few years old. Our home rate is 3.49% and we paid no points. There is no way we could get that...

    Self Build Trawler Yacht 50ft

I don't think most manufacturers have two house/domestic banks. Our boat has a house bank, engine start battery and a generator start battery. All are separate. I've seen boats with twins where each engine has a separate bank, one of which also serves as the house. The only benefit I see for...

Fisheries Supply Dehumidifier Sale on Now

We've been using the 2200 for years (prior iteration, the new one looks different). In the summer, it just about fills the reservoir over the course of a week. It can and does ice up when it gets cold (below 50 or so), but that won't hurt the unit and during the day when the sun warms the...

    Help! Cutlass bearing question

We have a similar setup in our Nordic Tug. If you are lucky, the bearing was installed with a small amount sticking out of the hole, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch. If that is the case, they may be able to remove it with a big pair of pliers after pulling the prop. This is how ours was replaced. If...

    Yanmar v Cummins v ...

I'm a big fan of the Cummins due to simplicity, longevity and cost/availability for parts. You are correct that the 6BT is 220 HP (that is what we have in our boat), but they also make a 6BTA which adds an aftercooler and comes in versions that put out well over 300 HP.
