Spring 2022, My Old Mainship Projects

I bought the Lenco for my Perkins T6-354 about 12 or so years ago. It was about $1000. Like you, I have been uncomfortable that it doesn't have removable end caps. So, a couple times since it was new I removed it and flushed it out with pressurized water and then re-installed it. Just a minor...

    Wet port side deck

Dave: Unfortunate that the epoxied joints at the cuts opened up and leaked. I will have to study this problem. I'd rather not have to lay-up glass on deck. Shawn: I'm happy to learn of the shoebox style overlap at the deck-hull joint. I suppose the leaks are only at the hardware bolts. That's...

    Wet port side deck

I agree Shawn that 21/32" marine plywood seems like the right core. I haven't had the stanchions on the deck for a few years now and will also permanently do away with them. It sounds like you applied new fiberglass overtop of the repaired decks, less holes. I noticed the lack of backing also...

    Wet port side deck

Thanks for your input Jay. I suspect that for me to do this work from the inside would be brutal. I'm not young and flexible anymore. I cut 9 feet (three 3 foot rectangles) of the port deck open using a Fein oscillating saw, very thin kurf. I hope I can match the current color of the deck with...

    Wet port side deck

I have discovered that the port side deck on my '79 MK1 is wet. This was found through sounding and use of a moisture meter. I cut away some of the fiberglass deck and removed the core. While all of it is wet only some of it is rotted. I will replace all of the core in this area. The question is...

tanks Mine is a '79 MK1. I did port tank first and starboard tank when the port one was done. Pumped the fuel to opposite tank so they would be a manageable weight. I took up the plywood sole, simply screwed in place over each tank. I assume this was as the factory built it. I disconnected the...

    MK1 prop shaft packing

Problem solved After trying many other ideas without success, I ground down the first two threads inside the packing nut using a tapered stone in my Dremel motor. This solved the problem. There is still plenty of thread remaining.

    MK1 prop shaft packing

brushing the threads I used a wire brush on as much of the sleeve as possible. For the packing nut I have ordered a 5/8" dia brass wire cylindrical brush with hex end. I will insert this into a hex extension I have chucked into a drill motor. Then I will clean up the female end and see if this...

    MK1 prop shaft packing

Cross-threaded It sure acts like it's cross-threaded. Took all the packing out. The packing nut can now wobble all around to fit a slight miss-alignment if there is one, which I don't think there is. It still just turns 1/4 turn onto the threaded sleeve and then stops. Now to determine if there...

    MK1 prop shaft packing

Thank you for the responses. I can feel that I have pushed the packing material about 1/2" into the packing nut. So it apparently is not preventing the nut from turning. Also, it doesn't feel like the nut is hitting something soft. The boat is out of the water. It seems something is a little out...

    MK1 prop shaft packing

Mine has a stuffing box that uses a single large nut that tightens over the threaded tube, plus a lock nut. I removed the nut to get to the packing material and now I can't reinstall it. It starts but only turns 1/4 turn and stops. It stops like it is tightened right up but I can't believe it...

    Sleeping in vee berth

It seems to me that the bow end of the vee berth on my MK1 slopes upward just a bit. Guess I like having my head higher than my feet. I haven't put a level on it though.

    Sleeping in vee berth

What is the preference among owners of older version of 34' Mainship trawler MK1, 2 and 3 owners, sleeping with head towards the bow or feet towards bow?

    Tricks to engine access(MK1 Perkins)?

I remove the pump from the engine when I replace the impeller on my T6.354 160hp. I bring it home to my workbench and change the impeller there. I use crazy glue to keep the key in place. I like the idea of making a dimple in the key though. I must say it is tight working in the engine...

    Mainship MK1 window

Follow-up on the replacement window project. It's all done and went well. I used the hardwood method. Important to have the wood pieces be of the correct length and width. Small pieces near the lower aluminum tracks helped keep things plumb. Yeah, it's a bit tricky but once I got the hang of it...
