    Dockwa Experiences

We've used Dockwa dozens of time in the Chesapeake region. In one case, Dockwa contacted me saying the marina had not yet responded to the request in the 24 hour timeframe. Eventually the marina responded. Very happy and had no bad experiences.

    Unknown item aboard...

It looks like an anchor retrieval system we had on a sailboat. Install on the anchor rhode before it is attached to the anchor. The bail should be big enough to slip over the shank of the anchor so you can pull it out backwards. Normal position is on the bow, the rhode passing thru the bail...

    halon system

Diesel may be less flammable than gas, but can still ignite, there are plenty of potential flash points (overheated battery, etc) in most engine rooms. Fire boy has good information on engine room suppression systems. Probably also should have auto shutdown for engines and generators.

    Following Seas

One thing to keep in mind is the speed of the breaking wave is often 12/13 knots. If the boat is traveling less than the speed of the breaking water, your rudder action is reversed.

    MS 34 Trawler broaching

With 30 knot winds and the waves you are describing, when the sea breaks under the boat, the water is moving on the order of 13 knots. If you are traveling less than 13 knots, your rudder is all of a sudden reversed (ie. 6 knot boat speed, 13 knot water coming from the stern, your rudder is...

    Ford Lehman 120 Coolant Leak

Possible leak in Heat Exchanger Hi, I recently had a problem where the coolant level was fine with the engine running, but would lose about a quart after the engine was shut down and cooled off. No coolant leak inside the boat, nor to the oil, etc. Turned out to be a leak within the heat...

Considering a bow thruster; best choices?

Consider Variable Speed Bow Thruster Look at the Variable Speed Bow Thrusters. Very little cost increase over the single-speed models. Great being able to slowly move your bow towards a piling without throwing the person standing on the bow - off the boat. I would not go back to the single...

    Chiller vs split?

Bill, our Eastbay 43 has 3 of the dometic units. Had them maintained @ Herrington about 2 years ago and they have worked fine ever since. One thing we've noted, some of the "50 amp shore power supplies" will trip out as you reach 50 amp usage - say 3 units + a few other things running. So...

    Marking Anchor chain

As a sailboater coming to the trawler community, I've used a chain marking system for about 20 years and have only lost 1 marker over that period,. I use Red & Green strips of 2" Rip-Stop nylon, cut in 3 foot lengths, marked with permanent marker (say 120') then threaded thru the chain every...
