    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

I saw a video where they had photo of a lifting keel with a ballasted bulb but I am not sure if that was from the ship. The builder said in the video linked below, that the AVS with keel up was 73 degrees and 88 with the keel down. 73/75 degrees vs 88 is not much of a difference. There is...

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

Yeah, he is accusing the Captain for the sinking, which to some extent is true, since the Captain is the Captain, but, it seems a bit early to be throwing stones at the crew.

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

There was a quote from the boat builders executive in the NYT that was posted on the Cruising Forum that was interesting and answers one of my questions, which was, what was the AVS of the ship? The executive said, "...the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the...

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

On a super yacht YouTube channel that was covering this incident, a crew member on a sister ship said they kept the keel raised at anchor. This was to not disturb the guest with the keel making noise and vibration when it was lowered. The man who helped rescue the survivors said they had...

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

This is supposed to be the same ship but getting knock down in a storm in NZ in August 2019. Notice the cat flipping in the wind. Freaky, not just what happened, but the NZ event was almost exactly five years ago.

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

Some of the reports said that ship was dismasted by the waterspout. If the wind had unfurled any of the sails that could have led to a dismasting and if there was an undeployed lifting keel... :-( The ship looks like it had a furling mainsail. Yep, she had a lifting keel, Boat Review...

    LFP batteries

And how well the battery manufacturers test the cells and battery. The manufacturer would be tracking cell quality since they are going to be responsible for the warranty. For instance, Praxis is a commercial marine systems manufacturer that builds LiFePo batteries and they would have to stand...

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

When I first read/saw the witness report of the sinking, the thing that stood out was how quickly the ship capsized and sunk. That would seem to be from a stability issue. My first thought was did the ship have a lifting keel? I watched the video linked above last night and there are comments...

Bikes for Boats - Jack Rabbit?

You might want to check out the conversations on Cruising Forums for bikes. Here is one, Ideal Boat Bike? - Cruisers & Sailing Forums. My take on reading the boat bike conversations over the years, is that the answer depends, and it's like finding the perfect dingy. :)

    Fortress / Danforth mooring

This article was published on Morgan's Cloud recently about hurricane moorings. While the article is about more permanent moorings and for hurricanes, it would be well worth the read. There are links to other discussions that might be useful too. The links is behind a paywall but well worth...

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

I think what Tiltrider1 is saying is that one can connect the cell phone to the StarLink WiFi. Once the phone was connected to the StarLink WiFi, one could update the plan. At least that is my interpretation. :)

    Twin Diesels versus single

This is not going to be helpful for must used boats but the new build we are considering can have twin, single, or a hybrid single engine. I supposed one could have a twin hybrid but that seems a bit too much. The single engine would be around 160 HP and the twins would be 85 HP. The boat can...

    Twin Diesels versus single

Engine room access is important. Having an engine room large enough to easily work on two engines can be a problem. The same engine room with one engine can be workable but add a second engine and it can be difficult to access the engine and engine room.

New Member with Question Regarding Annual Maintenance Cost

There is the maintenance cost of owning the boat, which is not the same as the total cost of boat ownership, which I consider the operating budget. Maintenance is the cost of keeping things working and being presentable and this can vary from owner to owner and boat to boat and place to place...

2nd start of fire in electrical equipment, what are your experiences ?

Yeah, if this was a common problem I think we would have heard about it I have been watching YouTube videos about Victron equipment for years and the comments are as informative, if not more, so than the videos often times. I have been watching quite a few Victron related videos over the last...

    Synthetic oil for diesel

For years, I have run extended hours/miles/time on my truck engine which is now getting close to 23 years old. The manual says to change the oil at 5,000 highway miles. I try to change around 15,000ish miles. Used Oil Analysis says I am throwing away good oil at 15,000ish miles. If I had...

    Synthetic oil for diesel

Why do you want to use synthetic oil? I have been using synthetic oil in my truck and tractor engines for decades for better cold weather performance and for extended oil change schedule.

Advise: Best company for getting a "6-Pack Captains License".

I have read of one, maybe two, instances where a licensed captain being held to a higher standard in court. I wish I had kept a copy of the discussion.... I can't remember if it was on Trawler Forum or Cruising Forum.:( In any case, it does not seem to happen very often and is a low...

Advise: Best company for getting a "6-Pack Captains License".

The thought we had was to go to one of the schools, pass the test, but don't get the license. We want the knowledge but the administrative steps to get and keep the license are not worth the trouble. Then there is the risk of being held to a higher standard.

    Starlink experience to consider

The dish has a GPS receiver. I would assume they would use the Internet data link to provide the dish location if they wanted too. For my house, they have my address and don't need GPS to find the location. I don't know what Starlink does, or does not do, with it's GPS data, other than they...

    Starlink experience to consider

My understanding is that the dish has a GPS receiver. Starlink knows, or can know, a dish location so they could use that capability to limit service.

    Arco Zeus External Regulators

One should exercise caution with Zeus at this point since it is new. This article, and others on the Morgan's Cloud website, explain why, Don’t Buy Generation One Electronics. This is likely behind a paywall but it is a cheap price to pay.
