the freshwater intake on Monk 2001 36'

Just remember that regardless of type or how cheap or expensive, there are only 2 kinds of pressure reducer valves: those that have failed and those that will. So NEVER leave the boat or turn in for the night with shore water on...better yet, disconnect it from the boat. You need to be aboard...

We suspect my high protein diet keeps clogging toilet - HELP

You have no issues with the toilet at home because there's water in the bowl when you go. Adding water to the bowl on the boat ahead of solids will solve the problem. If your toilet isn't designed to bring water into the bowl and hold it ahead of use, use a beer cup from the sink. It's very...

Dometic VacuFlush head, my first dive into troubleshooting

Marine Sanitation & Supply in Seattle marinesan.com is a VF dealer and service center who usually has parts and equipment for the best price and their shipping cost is very reasonable. --Peggie

Dometic VacuFlush head, my first dive into troubleshooting

Never make the mistake of buying VF parts from 3rd party vendors...they're knockoffs that not only may not fit, but can actually do damage. Dometic will only allow genuine VF parts and equipment to be sold by their authorized retailers/service centers.

Dometic VacuFlush head, my first dive into troubleshooting

I don't think you need to fill up your holding tank with that much water, but I do recommend following each flush with a quart to rinse behind the flush because the flush water flow is too wimpy to fill the hoses, much less rinse out the vac tank, duckbills and the pump. And btw soapy water...

Dometic VacuFlush head, my first dive into troubleshooting

A pump that has been running longer and longer after a flush and finally won't shut off at all is almost certain to be a failed vacuum tank switch. This will not cause the pump to cycle for no reason between flushes...an air leak in the plumbing and/or worn duckbills causes that. The vac tank...

Adding holding tank to Electro Scan

Because the ES can only hold a max of 1.5 gal at a time, it would be wise, if not necessary to install Raritan's "hold 'n' treat controls" package if you want to empty the tank via the ES. It will meter out only as much as the ES can accept. And because the motor in the ES is not designed for...

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

Sailboat owners have long defined cruising as "sailing your boat to exotic ports to work on it," and yachting as "sailing your boat to exotic ports to pay other people to work on it." I owned boats for 30 years and learned early on that owners of any boat that's too big to keep on a...

    Another holding tank vent question

You're WAAAY overthinking/overproducing what should be a very simple project. You'll want to enlarge the vent to 1"...so get rid of the assortment of pieces you have now and use a hole saw to enlarge the hole in the tank that's the right size to accommodate Uniseal UNISEAL (which is...

    Another holding tank vent question

Brass is the only real no-no...it's a mixture - not a compound - containing copper and zinc. The zinc will dissolve over time allowing bad things to happen. Bronze is the best choice for for thru-hulls, lasts for decades, but VERY expensive. Stainless steel and chrome plated metal are ok for...

    Clean out Vacuflush Vacuum Tank

It wouldn't build up at all if you run a full bowl of water through the system daily. The flush water flow is too wimpy to fill the hoses, so waste and TP build up in them, the the vac tank, pump, and duckbills too. VF owners are responsible for at least 75% of toilet problems posted in net...

    Another holding tank vent question

Do NOT use a brass--or any other metal--nipple anywhere in sanitation system plumbing including a tank vent line..use a PVC "hose mender" (short piece of PVC pipe that has the same OD (outer diameter) as the ID (inner diameter) of the hose you're "mending." Actually , with one exception--a...

Adding holding tank to Electro Scan

Is it illegal discharge the tank even if it is treated first? Yes. The ElectroScan is a Type I MSD, all of which are USCG certified to discharge treated waste directly overboard. Once it goes into a tank it's no longer considered treated waste. Reason: Although it reduces bacteria count to...

    Another holding tank vent question

The two most likely places for a vent blockage are the vent thru-hull and the other end of the vent line--that end of of the hose and the vent fitting on the tank. Clean the vent thru-hull fitting...use a screwdriver blade, Icepick or whatever works.. Better yet, replace the "vent" thru-hull...

Adding holding tank to Electro Scan

Why not continue to use both heads... Continue to use the ElectroScan where you can (just about everywhere but the Great Lakes and New England...it's legal on the entire inland river system), put a y-valve in the other toilet's discharge line that lets you send flushes to the tank where you...

Adding holding tank to Electro Scan

Exactly what I would recommend. All the Great Lakes are NDZ so I would also close the thru-hull and remove the handle from any holding tank overboard discharge pump. You can use the ES on all the US navigable rivers (defined as interstate with access to the sea), but maybe not in some marinas...

    Dip-Tube Question

It's a good idea only if you if you want to visually inspect the tank to know how much is in it. It's no longer necessary to cut a hole in the top of the tank to insert sensors that will quickly become clogged with the animal fats in waste. The best tank level monitors use sensors that attach...

    Dip-Tube Question

Unless it's metal, there's rarely if ever a need to remove the diptube as long as sludge on the bottom of the tank is flushed out 2-3x/season, which is easy to do: Pump out or dump the the tank, then put 5-6" of water into it via the deck pumpout fitting--cuz that sends the water into the...

We suspect my high protein diet keeps clogging toilet - HELP

I don't think so,, Bruce. If you think about the loo at home, there's always water IN the bowl to carry the deposit through the plumbing...it refills automatically after each flush. Flushing solids without water in even a wet bowl bowl results in "skid marks" that have to be cleaned by hand...

We suspect my high protein diet keeps clogging toilet - HELP

If you're not adding water to the bowl ahead of solids, you need to start doing that. Solid waste would clog a toilet on land with no water in the bowl. If your toilet isn't designed to bring in water and hold it, use a cup from the sink...if it won't stay in the bowl long enough for you go...
