Evinrude motor 1962ish rebuilt. Need to sell it as we are downsizing and I store it in our garage. Any ideas on what I should ask and the best place to sell it?

Be aware that there are unscrupulous folks out there. Avoid any interaction that seems odd to you or �feels� wrong. Inquiries from unknown buyers, buyers �agents� and other non-traditional approaches should be treated with extreme caution.
Beware of unsolicited contacts offering to put you in touch with someone else who is buying or selling via e-mail or text.

Hints that you may be dealing with a Scammer:

I can't imagine the amount of pollution that old 2-stroke puts out, you may wish to consider scrapping it. However, if a few pennies are important and it runs well, then put it on OfferUp. Things generally sell well in the $20-$50 range. Personally I would (1) scrap it; followed by (2) donate it to some kids who could use it.

Mako - I love your posts but this one is a total "flag on the play " Somewhere there is someone with a vintage boat that needs a vintage outboard to go with their spouse sporting a kerchief and horn-rimmed sunglasses.

Fair enough Weebles, I didn’t intend to come across offensively but it apparently did.
Back to the points, OfferUp is great for lower priced items. After that I like using Facebook Marketplace, although the bulk of inquiries tend to come from solicitors and scammers.
Good luck with your sale, but you should still consider donating or scrapping it. There might actually be some good money in the aluminum parts.

It's hard to offer much advice without details on the motor. It will have some blend of value as a motor, and value for nostalgia/history.

Best place to sell would be a classic boat show or a swap meet. When is the last time it has run and what is the hp?

The family that owns Hyannis Honda on Cape Cod (Massachusetts) has / had a very impressive collection of restored outboards on the show room floor. You might want to give them a call. From my records a contact would be Jay Goodwin.

Good looking old motor. It would surely be desirable to someone doing and 50's/60's fishing boat project. It appears you are in Cincinnati. I do not know what your inland waterways laws governing exhaust emissions are, but here in California there are restrictions on the use of old carburetor 2 stroke engines. In Alameda (Bay Area) we have a marine consignment store called the Blue Pelican. I have dropped off many marine related items to them over the years and they sell them for me. They often have old outboards like yours. Being on the Ohio River, you may have a similar store you could take it to them and it would be out of your way.
It shows beautifully! But it will need points, condensers, coils, carb kit, and water pump to have a decent sale. The powerhead has to be removed on this one to separate the shifter. Parts will be in the $100-125 range, and labor probably 3 hours for a geezer like me with experience. I think labor rates are in the $100-125 /hour range now. So you'll have $300+ in an engine, while pretty, has an intrinsic value only. You might see if there is a tech school that would take it, do the work, and let them sell it. When it runs correctly, you can remove the starter, spin the flywheel with hand pressure and it'll start. It would make a great small lake trolling engine--maybe they could get a couple hundred bucks back

I had one like that one--and it was an excellent dinghy motor--used it on a 10' 1940 "Wizard" Fiberglass boat (That is correct--one of the first commercial fiberglass boats built--it had a wooden transom glued and screwed to the Fiberglass one piece hull.) The motor started on the first or second pull (there is no "starter"--it was an "arm strong" pull start!). We used it at least 3 times every day when at anchor to take a dog ashore.
We lost our transmission on the main engine of our 65,000 # 62'LOA motor sailer coming into the Rue D'Brest, France. That 5.5 on the dinghy pushed the boat fast enough to get steerageway (about 2.5 mph) until we inflated our 13' Achilles inflatable boat with a 25 hp, which gave us about 5 mph and worked well enough to dock.
With luck if the engine is not frozen, it should run with a carburetor cleaning, clean the points and new plugs--I would definitely put in a new impeller. It may also need a new fuel pump (or rebuilt). Sometime it is easier to cut new gaskets than find an OEM. Some collector would love to have that motor in such good condition.

I have a 9.9 2016 OB seldom used that came with my current boat. 2 years I stored it. Tried to sell for $1000 as is and the only caller asked does it run before I pulled the ad.

That brings back memories! I had the exact engine, given to me by my aunt who's late husband used it for fishing on a lake in Idaho. I got it when I was about 10 years old and put many hours on it while it was attached to our second hand Sears 12' aluminum boat at our cabin on Whidbey Island. I even cobbled together a center console for it with a steering wheel liberated from an old wrecked chevy we found in a field. It finally seized up after about 15 years. Ran better that any late model 2 strokes I've owned.
