the pipe that supports the main boom i think its called stay.

should i mount it forward or aft?

i can do either. mounting forward means the pressure will be pulling and mounting it aft means pressure will be pushing on the stays.

any pros or cons for either?

When rigging, tension (pulling) is preferable because less material is required.
Rather than pipe you could use wire rope, often called 'cable', sized accordingly.

ok thanks. i already have the pipe. in Alaska all fishermen use the forward stays because that doesn't interfere with their nets etc.

i have seen some pbs with the pushing stays and was wondering if that's better to create a pushing force on the aft that would help stabilization.

The forces from the pipe will use the hull as the connection to the center of mass
so the exact spot they attach is not important. Normally with wire stays they are
run as far forward and aft as is practical which helps to reduce the loads on the wire.
