The attached pictures are of screens that came with our new to us Grand Banks 42 classic. I have no idea why sometimes pics post sideways as this one does nor how to remedy that. Sorry. The tape is because I have been varnishing them. I’m blessed to have as much contact as needed with the prior owner however when I asked him about the screens and why they may not fit he said he never once used them. Even with the generator and AC and times we will be on shore power, I can envision using these quite often at Anchor. The problem is I cannot find a way for them to fit.
1. The taller and rectangular one most likely is the vertical one that should go in the slot where the double saloon doors are, however they are slightly too wide. Slightly shaving the side will fix this however they are not quite tall enough to completely cover the vertical opening? When facing that companion way the aft cabin roof on the port side angles slightly down so that I believe that is my tip on how they should be placed with the lower side being to the port side. I also think the notches cut into what I believe is the top is to allow The hatch to close but even if I position it up to where that would occur there is still a gap all the way across the bottom of maybe 6 to 8 inches. Is it possible there was another screen that somewhere along the way was lost? My gut says no because I can’t see a reason to have two pieces especially to that different in size when one which seem to work just as fine. Maybe the original intent was for it to sit on top of a small patch board. That would get the opening of the screen a little higher off of the actual deck and I see advantages from that. We didn’t inherit a piece like that but it could easily be fabricated.
2 regarding the smaller square one, admittedly as I started typing this I had planned to share how I can’t make it fit over the top of the opening with the sliding hatch pushed forward as it is much too small, however it just occurred to me that it may be intended for the hatch over the forward cabin V berth? We won’t be back to the boat for a few days but I suspect I’m going to find that to be the case.

I’m so thankful for wisdom, advice, and pointers I get from this forum and would welcome any thoughts from you Grand Banks owners regarding my mystery screens.

Ummm, you varnished them before fitting?
Yes the tall one fits where the closed doors sit and the lid slides closed which is why it is not as tall as the opening and lower port side. I think you tried fitting inside frame with doors closed.
The other looks like the one in V berth.

screens

I have the same setup. the square screen is held in place by sliding barrel latches into holes drilled in the top hatch trim. The rectangle is held in place by wood blocks that swivel on the side of the double door. It fits better after I unscrewed the trim from the hatch to apply new caulk to stop some leaks. As part of that process I repositioned the trim to its original position. Note the square does not fit level. The aft end angles down to meet the height of the door screen.

Some pictures to explain.
