I have a perkins/sabre 135 hp diesel on my boat The air cleaner elements are brick shaped black foam pieces, that are stuffed into the air cleaner. These pieces disappear in a couple of years. i assume the foam disintegrates and the particles are sucked into the engine and burned. Not a very good thing I think

Presently I am not placing these elements into the air intake housing. The air is clean where I am cruising. However, maybe having the foam in there cuts down some of the diesel noise.

I wonder if any forum members have found a better solution for the air filter.

The "air filter" is a silencer that deadens the intake noise of the diesel. Most marine diesels don't have air filters because they operate in cleaner air than land engines. They usually include a screen. Shown is a Detroit Diesel air silencer to blower gasket.

Are those OEM filters? You may want to double check the parts book or call TAD. The PS engines normally have a foam pad wrapped into a SS wire mesh and then inserted into plastic housing.
