Boat sinks off of San Juan Island

Coast Guard announced a 49' Commercial fishing boat sunk off of Sunset Point, San Juan Island yesterday, Saturday 13 August. All crew members rescued thankfully. Cause of sinking unknown.[/FONT]

We are anchored off Roche Harbor Marina just around the corner from Sunset point, and experienced a light diesel sheen/slick yesterday afternoon.

No mention of what caused the sinking. 2,600 gallons of fuel would cause a much larger slick if all released. Also no mention of depth. I'd sure love to have about 1,600 gallons of that fuel!
Hopefully the boat was fully insured. Once again, everyone got off okay, the rest is just stuff!

Glad everybody got off okay. What a contrast -- the deepest part of our river is about 45 feet, and generally flat. That boat clearly landed on a slope.

Yeah, I found the depth of the water interesting, since even close to shore, the water was deep compared to South Florida, where having a few feet under the keel is normal.
