I have a Rule-A-Matic 40AF that has failed and stays on no matter what position the float is in.

I happen to have a Rule-A-Matic 40A.

I have cut the wires to the 40AF so it doesn't burnout my rule 800gph bilge pump. Fortunately this is a secondary / back up pump.

I have left the inline fuse associated with the 40AF harness and have cut the wires close to the float switch itself.

Can I wire the 40A to the wire harness from the 40AF? or do I need to buy another 40AF?

Thank you

If I understand what you are dealing with you just are replacing 1 failed float switch (40AF) with a working float switch (40A) while still keeping the working fuse from the 40AF? Other than the challenge of making sure you have waterproof wiring connections I don't see any reason this should not work fine.

Your understanding is correct.

Thank you
