Hi,
We have a 1984 Chien Hwa trawler and the engine room has a white sound proofing material - see photo. It is sort of hard to the touch, but crumbles away in areas where it got wet.
Does anyone know whether the material could contain Asbestos and how to test for it, if there is a possibility? We live on the boat.
Thanks so much!
Anna

I think if you search the word asbestos, there will be a forum from not long sho that covers that. If I recall- answer for 80s Taiwanese trawlers was “doubtful”

Test kits are sold on Amazon, at Home Depot, etc. Youbacrapeboff a small sample, send itbin, and have an answer by email within a few days.

That is 12 X 12 ceiling tile. I don't think that is original to the vessel. If it is, I am really surprised it hasn't disintegrated by now. It is terrible in moist areas.

I would say it’s 50/50, if it’s crumbling it should be removed. The dust will get into your air filters and also for possible health concerns.
