The trawler that I am refurbishing is the first large motor vessel that I've owned. The last boat was a 34' Vineyard Vixen and that was about twenty five years ago.

I am completely outdated with the electronics now available. Quack Shack is out of the water at the moment so I have the opportunity to update the depth transducer.

I am planning on updating with a Garmin GPSMAP 1042xsv. This unit offers a bewildering variety of sonar options. All I need is depth, water temperature and speed.

Educate me, please.

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce, unless you want water speed from your transducer for some reason, your GPS will give you speed over the ground. A good, basic, dependable & easy to install transducer for your 1042xsv would be the Airmar B150M tilted element chirp transducer. It does an excellent job showing depth and fish and comes in a 0, 12 or 20 degree configuration so all you would need to do is cut the hole and install it.
