So we have over-ventilated master stateroom and under-ventilated main salon. The main salon is directly over the master stateroom and the master stateroom ducting is located so that I may be able to cut a hole in the salon floor and re-direct air-flow into the salon.

Anyone try this? Seems fairly straightforward.

She is a 1985 Gulfstar 49.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem! In my case, I think it's because I have too many bends in my duct going to the main salon. Bends are BAD, as they reduce airflow substantially. I haven't made changes yet, however, as it would require another hole in a place I don't want a hole...

As for what you plan, I would humbly suggest you try to find any location to install the new outlet EXCEPT the floor. If you were to put it in the floor, I think you would risk disappointment. Cold air sinks...so it would risk staying around the floor and not be where you really want it for comfort. If you were to put it in the floor and had enough blower power to shoot it way up, it would probably then become too drafty. Look at any HVAC installation in any house you walk into and you will not see A/C outlets in the floor for just this reason.

P.S. My Dad had what appears to be the exact same size and model Gulfstar as yours. His was 1986, I believe. This was long ago and I do not know what HVAC experience he had with it. But wow, what an impressively livable yacht it was!

Scott...Its not ducting bends, the salon vent size is limited by cabinetry and when the prior owner had the new system installed he was told additional ducting is possible, but for major bucks. There is no other location other than the floor for it to be located. My parents house had HVAC hot air through floor ducts and seemed to work out OK. Additionally the area it would located is beneath a table and between two chairs so hopefully not too drafty.

Thanks for the feedback.

Ideally, you want floor ducts for heat, ceiling for A/C. With the returns opposite. But on a boat, you can only pick one for both modes. Air circulation can always be improved with a fan in the non-optimal mode.

Yep she is large and in charge. Although she is named Rogue, I affectionately call her "The Beast". Many design attribute which I really like.

Any documentation from your Dad's boat would be greatly appreciated!

I certainly would share, if I could. But both the boat and my Dad are long gone...
