Hello all another day another question. Anybody have any preference on which type of exhaust hose to use? I'm looking at the piece from engine to lift muffler and it's pretty dry cracked. Thinking about changing it out now. Any and all info is appreciated.

Eli

I have bought exhaust hose from Defender, don’t remember the brand but it worked fine. Pretty much any name brand would be ok. Waste hose is a different animal, there specific hose is very important.

Hose source

The Hose Connection
Tiverton, RI, had all the Lehman exhaust hose I needed in stock this spring

Yeah, finding 3 1/2 is getting difficult

Defender has 2 types listed in 3.5”. The wire wound is out of stock but the non wire wound is in stock and is for short straight runs.

The piece I'd like to replace has a hard bend.4-5 ft length and about a 90 degree bend.

I just bent mine and it didn’t kink. I think I made it 1 foot longer. It was the wire bound type.

I bought some of the VETUS ribbed exhaust hose, very flexible and I put a pretty sharp bend in it if I remember correctly....well I know I needed to so that's why I went that route.

It is probably has a sticker shock now that might make me re-engineer it if I had to do it over again.

Holy Jesus!!! 450 bucks for a 6ft section. No tax no shipping on that yet. 30,40,even 50 a foot yeah, but 90?? I'll wait a bit

Well, you did buy a boat…

Yeah, I'll wait for the other to come back in stock for less than half the cost. I figure the complete exhaust on this boat (which I'm gonna do) would be about 12-1500. Not 3Gs

And yes, I did buy a boat.

You don't have to use all flexible.... a combo of flex, straight and fiberglass connectors may bring the price down.

It is only exhaust..... so gravity water and low pressure fume tight isn't all that hard to achieve.

I've seen the alternatives and sometimes you don't have a choice but to deal with it. But in this situation and my brain(not so smart brain) believes in the less connections the better. Exhaust to lift muffler and lift muffler to stern. 2 pieces of hose and 8 clamps. Yes, I double clamp EVERTHING under the water line. All 100% stainless clamps.

I like ABA or AWAB T bolt clamps for the exhaust. No welds to rust and all 316S/S.

Your choice..... but you really shouldn't fear glass joints....especially if just one per engine is used.

Also, even though you may not keep the boat forever, severe bends do shorten hose life, even the "flex" kind if real sharp.

I looked into them. At one point I figured a a 45 would be perfect with very minimal bend on the 2 pieces but the whole "less connections is better" idea always screams in my head.

I honestly thought in would look waaaaay much better,,, but,,,,

I’ve got the silicone exhaust hose between engine and lift muffler installed by a PO. I replaced the rest of the exhaust hose to the stern with Trident wire bound exhaust hose. The trouble I had was finding someone that would ship over a 10’ piece, I needed 14’. I went with a 9 and a 4 and a fiberglass 90. Bought from West Marine.

I'm in salisbury Ma at the moment. I will travel a few hrs for it if the 1 of the 2 companies has it.

I haven't factored that in,,, as far as max length of product. But at the prices of these I would think company would be better off buying in rolls and cut to specific customer lengths. Make a bit more money that way.

I didn't see anyone mention American Diesel the Lehman specialists.

Brian can be reached here https://americandieselcorp.com/.

Don't know anything about costs but for any engine pieces I need I start with Brian.

Nice people to deal with.

Are you referring to the ID or OD? My FL120 is 3" ID hose. That is what you are looking at. Fiberglass exhaust tube is measured in the OD as it has to fit inside the 3" ID hose. Side note: My transom fittings were removed for re-bedding. I had to cut off a fiberglass build up to accommodate the 3" hose. I now have to re-glass the fittings to receive the 3" hose.

While in theory, I understand desire for fewer connections, fiberglass exhaust with hose connections seems pretty stout. Fiberglass exhaust avoids droop and will outlast hose. Much to be said for fiberglass, in my opinion

3&1/2. ID. That's what mine is ID 3 and a half. IIRC, Brian from AD said the 3 is not as common

OK. I just did a search on line and fund several sources for 3"1/2 exhaust hose. Good Luck.

Hamilton Marine has the Vetus 3.5” flex in stock. Not a bad drive from Salisbury Ma. (That’s where I am too)
