We have a Jabsco 37010 electric head with the single push button switch that adds water to the bowl and starts the grinder pump. We also have a newer 2-button head where one button fills and the other fills & flushes.

Has anyone converted this to fresh water flush by just adding a 2nd switch and solenoid to prevent back flow into the potable system? I know they make a kit but it's about $600....

For a bit more than the $600 is a Raritan Marine Elegance head. It is a great head.

Won't work. Toilets designed to use fresh water don't pull water in, they have to use pressurized water and have built-in siphon breakers and valves to prevent backflow into the fresh water line when the water pump isn't on. So instead of a pump that pulls water in, they have a valve that opens to ALLOW water to come into the toilet, closes to block it...much the same way the faucet on a sink works.

I agree with Dave...if you want to flush with the fresh water, buy a toilet designed to use fresh water. You can have the Raritan Marine Elegance, which is the top rated macerating electric toilet Raritan Marine_Elegance Promo.pdf It's also exceptionally quiet, even quieter than some household toilets. A bunch of people here have 'em, and love 'em. In fact I've yet to come across anyone who doesn't.

This retailer has it for about $800 including a choice of multi-option flush panels

Thanks all

What Peggie said.

Although, if the Jabsco 37045 electric freshwater flush system might fit -- screw for screw -- in the existing mounting, it might be worth a look for comparison. Mostly just for comparison of installation pain.

We had a 37045 with flush button and 2-way rocker, worked well over the 15 years we had that boat. It got less "Quiet" over time as the motor aged, got quieter again after eventual motor replacement (which was cheap and easy) at about the 10 (?) year mark...

Dunno prices at all, and I can't compare against the recommended Raritan model; no personal experience with one of those.

If you would like to change your Jacobs toilet to fresh water flush using a solenoid valve you may like to consider changing it to fresh water flush only. This would address your concern of possible potable water contamination. Feed the fresh water via the solenoid valve (and back flow preventer, if desired) directly to the bowl, this allows the removal of the impeller section of the salt water pump. Removing the impeller allows the pumps full power to run the macerator considerably increasing its effectiveness. You can also now seperate the control from having to run the bowl filling/emptying simultaneously. ie add water to the bowl, empty the bowl or both simultaneously. Or …….. do the smart thing……….”what Peggie said”.
