Leaking Screw Holes on Fly Bridge

Just bought a 1978 Marine Trader, and have some work ahead! But worth it in the end! Got a question for you experts. Noticed a few leaks in the salon ceiling, obviously coming from screw holes on the fly bridge. Any suggestions on the best way to fix the leaks, seal, etc. Looking the best material, 3M 5200 or other for sealing??? Thanks!

Welcome aboard. Hmmm...."...obviously coming from the fly bridge" Well, Mr/Ms. K, as far as leaks go nothing is necessarily obvious. Granted, if the ceiling shows evidence of leakage, it's probably a given that there is an area of water ingress in the FB as water seldom flows uphill unless by means of capillary action. That being said, the outflow of water could be very far removed from the inflow so stage one is finding the source. Do NOT discount even the smallest cracks. Check the bedding of everything that penetrates the FB skin and report back.

Mr./Ms. K. It's difficult to advise with so little information. Is the sub deck around the area of the screw holes wet or rotted? This alone will greatly change the approach you can possibly take. No rot? Simply fill the holes with pretty well any epoxy (Marine Tex-?) and call it good. Rot? Much more involved solution(s). I would strongly advise against using any sort of caulk and definitely NOT 5200 and NOT silicone.

Thats a great link for learning how to do a lot of things. Just dont buy the butyl tape from him. He like a lot of others likes to buy the stuff on the cheap and then resell it with a huge mark up.

Heres where you want to get butyl tape from. Lots of differents widths for cheap. If you have an rv that needs a new roof they are the place for that too. Just sayin. Caution! - Butyl Tape is like vinyl electrical tape - you can but very different qualities - the cheap stuff isn't worth the price differencs.
I have seen posts from folks that used his stuff and swear by it vs others available

That is my attitude as well. He has been a huge asset to the boating community and shares his expertise and advice freely on sailing forums. He makes his living as a marine electrician in Maine.

Beyond the issues of the quality of the butyl tape, I care about who I do business with. For example, I would NEVER walk into an independent chandlery, look at and compare different products, get the advice of the staff in making a product decision, then walk out and order the product cheaper online. I prefer to support those who support my hobby and repay them for their service.

Of course in this case, I don't think he makes much money on selling the butyl tape, but still.....

Klines, your query is a little vague. By "screw holes", do you mean screws attaching teak decking? That sit under(or did sit under) plugs concealing them?
If so, you have a deck issue which likely requires removing the teak and making good the real deck underneath.
