My new ancient boat came with a Lowrance Hook (circa 2016?) at the flybridge helm, which was supposed to be in working order and had apparently worked great for many years. Well, it is in almost working order: all GPS functions are working fine. And the transducer is sending believable temperature data.
But -- and this is a big ugly BUT -- the depth reading is (a) flashing and (b) nonsense. I'm getting readings (in feet) of 400 and more when I know (and other depthsounder confirms) I'm in 3 fathom.
And depth was the feature I most wanted at the flybridge because it's handy to anchor from up there, with good all-round visibility. So this is disappointing.
So... any ideas? The transducer looks clean and almost new, there was no gross overgrowth of marine life on it when I hauled out a few days ago (oh well, not that simple). It looks like the cable is "potted" into the transducer at the hull end so can't be reseated there... and the other end plugs into the back of the unit with a twist/lock collar. There isn't much to go wrong in between.
I read an online rumour that this problem might be solved by doing a hard reset on the unit -- but am reluctant to do this without understanding (a) how and (b) what the consequences might be (for example would I lose my loaded charts inherited from PO). All the instructional videos I can find are of course for much later and fancier models.
The obvious question is "which model is it" -- and alas I am not sure. It says "HOOK" in white on a black screen when it starts up. I'll examine the unit carefully for a model number and take pics of it next time I'm at the boat. Maybe I can find a manual somewhere.
Anyway, if "temp works but depth doesn't" is some kind of known problem then I'd sure like to know what it is and how to fix it.
