I continue to look at the Mainship 390. I recently compared it to the 400. The interior galley and living space seems much larger on the 400. When I looked at the pictures I saw a sitting table as part of the 400 galley/salon area. It made me wonder where folks with a 390 sit and eat or play cards or whatever. Do you 390 owners have options for this? Are there recommendations differences between the 390 and 400? I notice set the Yanmar 375 horsepower engine is used in both. My guess would be set the Yanmar would use more fuel in the 400. Any comments regarding this posting would be appreciated.

I have noticed the same thing in most Mainships... House furniture in the salon. It's almost like they build them to use as weekenders not distance boats. You lose a lot of storage space you would have under and behind built in furniture. I can't speak first hand about the fuel economy but I have done a lot of research while boat shopping. Evidently the Yanmar 375s don't like to be run for any length of time below the peak torque curve. That looks like about 2,200 rpm for 10 mph. Not exactly in fuel saving mode. To me they would be better boats with smaller engines.

We bought two folding chairs from Ikea:

This looks and feels so much like teak, that I replaced a broken board with teak and you can't tell the difference.

We also replaced the table top with this one:

EUDE Nautic Tabletops and Legs – EuroDesign

NOTE: Above is our exact table, however ours is 36". I couldn't find that model any longer.

This allows us to have a smaller coffee table, when the post is lowered. Or it can be opened and raised for dinner or cards. We place the folding chairs on each end of the table.

Here is a 390 vs 400 Comparison chart

Do you have difficulty reaching the oil dip stick for the genset. Mine has this soundproofing blanket velcro'ed on and the dipstick is impossible to reach.

I really wish you had not shown me that comparison. Lol

Sorry Dave. We liked the 390 a lot when we looked at it, but LOVED the 400 so that's what we ended up with. Still love it.

As to the household style furniture, that is one of our must haves in a boat. We both have back issues and if we sit in builtin furniture it doesn’t work for long. Most people when they look at a boat don’t sit on the builtin furniture long enough to realize that it isn’t comfortable for hours of sitting while reading a book or watching a movie. I can live without the storage but I can’t live with furniture that I can’t sit in long term.

We looked at 390s a little bit as well when we were looking at our 400. It's a very nice boat, and there are some beautifully maintained/upgraded 390s out there. It would likely have been our choice if the 400 didn't exist.

In general, it seems to me that as the years went by Mainship's build quality gradually improved. There are a few places, like no plastic hatches, where the 400 has distinct advantages over the 390 from a quality standpoint. It is, of course, also more money.

The hull shape on the two boats is not the same. While the 400 is still a better boat at sub 10 knots than going above hull speed, it is better in the 15 knot range (with twins) than the 390 is. That influenced our decision quite a bit.

We made a high low drop leaf table for our 390, great for two and with a couple of deck chairs and leafs up comfortable for four. Modeled the table after one we had in a Carver.
