Mainship pilot 30 steering fluid

Anyone ever check steering hydraulic fluid? Do you check it with the small thumb screw on the steering column? Are you suppose to see fluid when you take the screw out and if it is low, do you fill from that screw? and lastly what type fluid does one use?

What the manufacturer recommends. There are substitutes, but for me, this is steering
There are plenty of sources, in stock at you local Marine Supply Store, or online.
