Just got the bad news on one of my engines. It has to be pulled and replace the block. Problem is, can't find one in the PNW and more extended searching isn't coming up with anything either. Anyone know of one available?

But why, what is wrong with block?
I ask because I got such a diagnosis once and it turned out to be a valve cover gasket leaking oil. If you do not know why a good reason, get a second opinion.

There is currently what sounds like a pretty comprehensive rebuild listed in THIS forums' classified section that looks like it may be located in San Francisco

I have had 3 diesel mechs check it out and take it apart. Not interested in troubleshooting again in an online forum. Thanks for sharing your own experience.

Great, not really, but you know the problem and I guess you do not want to share it to help others avoid having the same thing happen.

You just want a lead to a block. I would certainly look at the 10K one being offered on TF. Good luck.

There’s a take-out in Snohomish advertised in Craigslist right now.

I don't have the expertise to clearly define the damage to the block and the cause has not yet been determined. But, your snark is duly noted. I clearly stated my need at the beginning of this thread. You're free to participate in any way you wish, of course.

These engines and blocks become available on a pretty regular basis, just keep following.

We are living in Louisiana now (taking care of my MIL) and the boat (Defever 44 OC) is in Anacortes, WA. I think the mechanic may have found one but won't know until Friday or Monday. He said the one on craigslist looked like it had severely over-heated but might consider it if the other one falls through.

The diesel guy found a working engine to replace my old one. He's going to install it next week. He sent me a video of the engine, on the ground. He started it and ran it at varying RPM for several minutes while checking for any strange sounds, vibrations, smoke, etc. Seems OK and the price was reasonable so I gave the "go ahead".

Thank you to all who expressed an interest in helping. I will return to this thread when the work is completed and I have more information about the original issues to update any of you who might still retain some curiosity about it. Hopefully, there will be something useful for preventing whatever caused the problem.

Good move, you now have lots of ancillary spare parts too.

I consulted an engine machinist about FL when I was looking at buying. He said that there were some that had porous castings and A/F would leak into the cylinders through the cylinder walls. He did say that that was typically a problem that showed up fairly soon after manufacture. They can be sleeved (I'm pretty sure). Before giving up on the block I would talk to a reputable engine machinist. These guys are real good at repairing virtually any problem with blocks, including cracks that I've seen "stitched". It's pretty amazing. Best of luck.

Lots of other engines out there.

Choosing another engine gives you the opportunity to go bigger or smaller.
Most trawlers were overpowered so many could benefit from a smaller engine. Many want to go slower and run their engines hotter to avoid the problems associated w underloading .. that is running an engine down in the 25% load category.

Some engines would be a lot of work and expense to utilize because of their differences re exhaust plumbing and similar. And then some others are almost a drop in.
