For those of us that have enjoyed the unspoiled beauty of the Lydia Ann Channel near Port Aransas, Tx for years, but may be cruising distant waters at this time....things are a'chang'n back home..
For the benefit of cruisers that haven't sailed this far South, the Lydia Ann Channel is arguably the most pristine body of water on the Texas coast, and has considerable historic and environmentally sensitive areas, as well as being home to several endangered species. Sailors, fishermen and kayakers have enjoyed this natural treasure year round for decades.
Judging from this lawsuit just filed by The Friends of the Lydia Ann Channel, it appears that the COE has "short cycled" the permitting process and approved an industrial barge fleeting, storage and service facility in the channel without proper public hearings or required impact analysis. http://www.guidrynews.com/15December/35715FLAC.pdf
It appears from the lawsuit notice and observing AIS signatures on Marine Traffic, that they have basically turned the mooring into a floating chemical and petroleum storage facility. The Friends of Lydia Ann Channel has a webpage with all the details http://savelydiaann.org/. and provides a link with info on how to help the cause.
It sure seems that with all the industrial areas already designated in the surrounding area, that a better compromise could have been found for this facility...
