Evidently the plants hit by the severe winter issues are still not producing antifreeze. Wholesale prices took a big jump Monday. If your favorite big box store has winterization af on the shelf suggest you grab it now.

Aw crap. I guess I better make room in the garage to buy my usual 6 cases...

AF doesn't age as rapidly as 600 rolls of toilet paper!

Report a shortage . . . therefore there will BE one . . .

And if the major new outlets are reporting an antifreeze shortage, . . . . then there will BE one, as even idiots who don't even know HOW to change antifreeze will go out and "stock up" just in case they need it . . .:nonono:

Surely "global warming" has reduced demand.

Ain't no shortage here in St. Pete.... yet. Walmart has it for $3 a gal.

However, to get a gallon of ethylene glycol (industrial quality) for my Hynautic throttles, was $42 a gallon and hard to get in June.

Home Depot had plenty of alcohol based but I got close to the last 6 gals of propylene glycol based AF

The last few years I would go through at least 40 gallons of -200. I am going into heated storage this winter so there will be an extra 40 gallons on the market this year…

My Walmart had two pallets of the pink AF on the floor today. StarBright brand for $4.50/gal and Super Tech for $2.70 a gal. Since I need it in the next few weeks, I picked up my seasonal supply now.

Most likely different primary ingredient... alcohol vs E glycol

Exactly what “severe winter issues” are talking about. It’s fall, not winter. Actually not even fall yet. This sounds like utter BS to me.

Greetings,
Mr. tt. "This sounds like utter BS to me." Indeed BS. Make your own AF and be done with "shortages".

Posted as a courtesy to Forum members when the wholesale price per pallet from several marine industry wholesale suppliers doubled last Monday and they could not assure late fall delivery of additional product.

As to weather this is what I found:

Not sure why the rude posting. Generally I find that if I don't agree I just move on.

This is talking about Ethylene (although not specifically Ethylene Glycol). Winterizing antifreeze is Propylene Glycol, so while this may be an issue for engine coolant, it's not clear that it'll impact availability of winterizing antifreeze.

That link was seven months ago following that freak cold snap in Texas...from last winter.

There are certainly some very odd supply chain disruptions and price fluctuations -- the price of certain koi (fish) food just skyrocketed, for whatever bizarre reason -- but there's enough disruptive stuff going on without creating more anxiety without solid info.

Thanks for clearing up the "severe winter issues" reference.

My skepticism is because I think lots of industries are using Covid, "chip shortages", "supply chain issues" and a blanket excuse to raise prices. It's the latest "my dog ate my homework" excuse. And I've seen too many sales guys shovel the most amazing loads of crap.

Now some of this is very real, but I take it all with a dose of skepticism.

All,

Truly some supply concerns and yes..... they are still the ripple effects from the February freeze event.

Ethylene oxide and propylene oxide suppliers (only 3 domestic producers) are still under constrained production with allocations having been in place since February. These two little basic building block chemicals are the feed streams to nearly everything you touch, taste and see. You can see the direct correlation to the ethylene and propylene glycol mentioned above.

Earlier in the year there were TF posts regarding shortages of bottom paint, epoxy primers etc.....yep....you guessed it....follow the chemistries back and you find that EO and PO are used in the manufacture of the resin pre-cursors. Epoxy resin pricing has nearly tripled since February.

Now for the good news.....industry estimates are that things won't show much improvement until mid-summer 2022. Those "bottom jobs" are going to get a bit more pricey until then.

Regards,

Your resident molecule bender
