raymarine DSM300 software upgrade

I have been working on a problem with the DSM300 depth sounder connected to E120 system . It works fine on startup but will then work erratically. This is a known issue with this older unit. The Raymarine forum suggests the starting point is to upgrade the DSM300 software to the latest version. I have downloaded the latest (4.2) and followed the instructions. The upgrade screen will come up but after plugging in power to depth sounder unit it will give a screen with "remote unit failed to upgrade". Raymarine tech support has not given any useful information. Anybody have experience with software upgrades on older systems?

I bought a DSM300 in 2003. In 2013 it started locking up. Called Raymarine and they sent me a CP300 to replace the DSM300. There were known problems so they just replaced it. But that was 10 years ago. I doubt they are still doing that. Probably best to just replace it with a newer model.

My experience with the DSM300 is similar. They worked for about 10 years and then was advised by Raymarine to upgrade.

Actually Raymarine sent me a new CP300 and then the next year they sent me a new CP370.
