Mainship 430 owners,

I'm trying to run a cable from the upper helm to the rudder and haven't found a way... yet.

I've already built a new chase that runs from the upper helm to the lower helm along the forward part of the starboard door, but doesn't look like that will work. Hard to get from there to the back, but could. (when I finish it will post that project with pictures.)

Easy to go down the chase on the starboard side by pulling the panel off between the windows and back to the access hatch under the desk. But from there, it’s a mystery. Pulled up the aft stateroom stairs, all hatches in the aft state room and can’t see a path.

However, the old rudder indicator goes from the helm into the boat about mid point below the aft stateroom windows, but can’t figure out where it goes….

Why not via ER?
I'm not familiar w/ the 430 but all the stuff at the helm must go to the ER.
Don't you have access from ER aft to rudders? maybe not person but enough to run a snake & pull wires? They must be able to install auto pilots, stern thrusters, etc on those.

I am not familiar with your exact boat but on our last boat I was able to get from the engine room to the lazarette by running the wiring alongside the exhaust hose. It was pretty easy on that boat.

Easy to get to the ER from either helm. It's from the ER through the aft cabin that's a bitch. Porman gave me some great routing that I'm going to try. From the ER to a hatch on the floor of the state room, then snake a fish over the aft water tank that comes out in the lazarette.

Didn't MS install any PVC conduits next to stringers in that model? In the 34 T/HT they installed one port one stbd forward and used them for thruster & windlass wiring. From ER aft is all open on those so no need for stern thruster but where buried below aft cabin it would make sense...? I wonder if everyone that wanted auto pilot, rudder position, etc had to figure a way to get there?

I don't know why manufacturers don't put in conduit to run wires. At times, it's a reall PITA.

I created a new chase from helm to helm that runs right down the side and makes running wires super easy. Just need one in the back.

They put a nice rigging tube in the 400 that goes from the ER up to the FB. Then they stuffed it so full of wire (50% of which does nothing) that there is no longer room to slide a piece of 14 gauge wire through it. Then they zip tied the entire bundle together so well that it is all but impossible to trace and remove the unused wire.

Had I kept the 400, that would have been one of the many projects to do... clean that thing out.
