My 81 CHB 34 needs attention given to the upper helm. 20+ turns lock to lock just doesn't seem safe.

Is this something a rebuild kit would fix, or do I need to replace the helm unit?

If I can put in a rebuild kit, how do I find the right one, as I cannot find a model number - just the Seastar I tag on it. I attached photos of the backside if that helps.

Welcome aboard. You might contact boatsteer.com and ask their advice.

At 20+ turns lock to lock have you checked that it is full of fluid and not pumping air.......

Yes, system is full of fluid and bled.

If it's original equipment it's 40+ years old. While that helm may be repairable, perhaps its time for a new one.
The current crop of Sea Star helms are available in several volumes, that depending on the diameter of your steering cylinder will give you options for turns L to L. Consider that these are manual hydraulic systems, and that the fewer turns the more effort to turn the wheel, so choose wisely.
A new helm will play nicely with your lower station, no worries

As far as I can tell from the pics it is a hydraulic pump. Take it out and have it rebuilt. If they cannot they will tell you.
