Two of my tachs have started to register 500 rpms lower than they should and I want to have the other two that I believe to be accurate tested. I have two helms and two Cat engines. One tach from each side and each helm started to malfunction at separate times so its time to repair. Does anyone know of a quality tach repair company that can handle the task. I am near Tampa Fl but dont mind shipping for the job to be done properly. Thanks

Lauderdale Speedo. They worked on my tachs, reasonable and quick.

+1 for Lauderdale speedo. Have used them multiple times as yanmar tachs suck. Good outfit.

How much might be a good (VDO?) programmable tach vs the cost of a repair with shipping back and forth? Methinks maybe not much difference.

If they are Faria, you might contact them. I had them make a tach repair.
If you send to Lauderdale Speedometer, be sure to include the engine info so they can calibrate correctly.

Also common for grounds to get corroded. Check for voltage drop using a simple volt meter from the ground lug of the battery. Anything higher that .1 volts is an issue.

Mine were new programable VDO tachs. Lauderdale Speedo charged maybe $50 or so to program them for me. Well worth it.

I installed two different brands (upper and lower helms) of programmables, driven by a signal (pulse) generator. Following the manufacturer's directions, I was able to dial in the read-outs to high accuracy, verified with a phototach. I did not find it difficult or time-consuming. Once adjusted, they stayed accurate.
