Wind is especially important factor at my home port on Lake Champlain. What is your favorite weather app for iPhone that includes wind speed?

Windy is my #1, and Windfinder #2

Remember most apps will not take into consideration local weather/geographic effects such as funneling of wind ([important on long skinny lakes), turbulence induced direction change, etc......

Windy has been my #1 favorite for several years now. Just downloaded a new one to try yesterday "PredictWind". Jury is still out on this one. (What a "yawn" of a go-to-market name for an app, however...).

1/ Windy.
2/ Weather Underground

For ocean voyages (GRIB files) Passage Weather

Bouyweather, same people who created Surfline which is a popular surfing site that has been around a long time.

Windy, but I would suggest the paid version which has more details. Both are inexpensive.

Then NWS 3 day data.

They are often fairly similar, but I like to compare all 3 sources and find the Apps do a slightly better job than the NWS data.

Have been using all of them a lot the past couple weeks to decide when to leave on an up coast 15 hour run and the verdict is Tomorrow “night” at 0100.

The last time I was on Lake Champlain was, well many decades ago, so I can't speak with any certainty on which apps work best on the lake. I use Windy, Ventusky and Sailflow. I find Windy does a good job with the big picture and Sailflow is better a localized predictions. For planning prior to departure dig around on NOAA's National Weather Service web sites, you'll find some easy to use but challenging to find forecast tools. For example for Lake Champlain I found this one Lake Champlain Graphical Forecast.

We’ve traveled the entire St Lawrence River, the Hudson, crossed Lake Ontario, and locked through most of the NYS canal system. The worst part of any trip is getting off Lake Champlain. The wind is a big factor in water conditions, and it can whip up at any time. The Champlain Bridge is the happiest sight from the helm because it means we’ll be off the big part of the lake soon.

Preparing to leave on a trip in early June. Everything is going smoothly, from new canvas arrival to overnight shake-down. Today’s windy weather, however, caught me by surprise, and we have no plans to leave the dock today. Looks like we’ll plan another pre-dawn departure and hope for the best.

A good reminder. Thank you.
