Yanmar wont shut off from off/on/start switch

Hi all...on the hook in James River, VA...Yanmar 6LP-STE...multiple attempts to turn off engine from ignition switch fails, throw her in neutral and manipulate throttle linkage doesn't help, I'm reluctant to turn off main breaker because we're at sea and I'm presuming she wont restart. I'm ok with burning fuel til we get back to dock in 5 hrs but while sitting out here with time, was wondering if anyone has any troubleshooting suggestions...thanks in advance...Mike
 
Check the shut-off solenoid by the injection pump. I had the linkage fall off once when a nut backed off the bolt. Move the solenoid by hand to shut the engine down.
 
Sorry, should have said to move the shut-off lever,not the solenoid.

Opened engine main breaker and she shut down nicely. Closed and restarted nicely. So I'm thinking ignition switch is bad?? Ignition switch wiring @ starter?? Too hold to climb in engine bay at the moment. Will keep up in the loop. Thanks.
 
In my thinking it is either a bad solenoid or a bad connection in the stop circuit. You can put a meter on the connection on the solenoid and push stop and see if you get a signal on the connector. If not then check all the connections in the circuit.
 
When you closed the main breaker and it stated back up, did it sound like the satarter was still engaged?
 
Before you start changing things, make sure the switches on both the upper and lower helm are in the correct positions. Ive found on my 390 that i either cant shut it off or cant start it. I have rockers at the lower helm and toggles at the upper helm and they are reversed from each other. Ive gotten so I will only stop and start from the lower helm.
 
Another common problem. There is a cable on the stop plunger that is prone to hanging up it gets a little salt. Check and lube that also.
 
One of the commercial boats I ran had Detroits with "push to stop" buttons. Occasionally one or the other would fail to shut down when the button was pressed. It was simply the stop lever sticking so the solenoid couldn't pull it to the stop position. We'd just go down to the ER, manually pull the lever, then give it a shot of spray lube. Good till the next time which might be a year later.
