I am always wary of using a belt sander. If you go that route follow Comodave's advise and practice first. A more agressive orbital sander like the Porter Cable 335 might work well. They are easy to find on Craigslist. A 6" Fein orbital disk sander also works very well but they are pricey...

I have refinished many soles like this and worse. After stripping the finish a wash with oxalic acid usually brightens the darkened area. PM me for more details.

Thanks for the kind words Mark. Forgot to mention that a big factor for us was the Soft Chocks stored in the fly bridge lockers when using the dinghy. The fly bridge/boat deck is free of "toe stubbers".
