In the original picture it looks like the batwing design will fit the contour of the hull when retracted giving a dock friendly profile. The batwing design may be more about practical considerations than more efficient design.

My wife loves to go slowly, never fast. For me, once in a while I would like to go fast but fast for my boat is 9.5knots WOT on both engines.

I have 700 gallons useable on board and burn 3.25 gph @7.2 knots and includes generator use. The farthest I have pushed it was 1,185miles leaving myself with 165 gallons left or 365 miles in reserve or 24%. I do not have fuel gauges so I dip the 4 tanks every couple of days when cruising.

Barnacles grow very fast. I think we are looking at the cutlass bearing housing full of barnacles.

If they are 5/8" ID, they are most likely AC pan drains.

I will bet that many had written you off and were worried you would abandon and run. Congratulations, it takes persistence to finish a job like that.

In the picture provided, the tube looks to be made of bronze, not stainless and the wear is classic shaft rubbing through, not corrosion.

Keep in mind that the propeller shaft log is not considered a wear item and was designed to last the life of the boat. That shaft is suppose to run in the center of the log and not touch and wear the sides. That wear is caused by a problem and the most likely problem is unstable motor mounts...

Are you actually solving the problem with the shaft log with replacement? Looks like the prop shaft wore out the bottom of of the log. Probably due to collapsed motor mounts. If the motor mounts are replaced or adjusted you can probably center the shaft and epoxy the bottom of the log back to...
