Silicon Coating for Upper Helm Aluminum Top

Thanks for your inputs. Letting it age won't stop the leaks at the seams and fasteners. I will have to take it apart and reseal all of the joints to take that approach. I used Interlux Zinc Chromate when I did the top 10 years ago.

Silicon Coating for Upper Helm Aluminum Top

Thanks for your comments. It is just time for the top to be recoated. I did and Interlux coating 10 years ago and it is pretty much shot. I am putting a vinyl beadboard header in the aluminum dog house cover and found a few spots where water was seeping through the cover (seams, screws, pop...

Silicon Coating for Upper Helm Aluminum Top

Title tells the story. I am about to coat the sheet aluminum top to my fully enclosed upper helm with a 100% silicon roof coating. Am I crazy? I will add play sand to provide a less slick surface to walk on when it is raining should I have to go up top. I have considered an acrylic coating...

Broken T6.354 Range 4 Oil Dip Stick - HELP

Thanks for the re-assurance. My diesel mechanic did not seem too concerned about the small part, likely residing in the oil sump, though he stated it was not a "good" thing. So, I did not panic when I discovered the missing part. I am going to completely clean that engine and associated bilge...

A BIG THANKS to all of you!!!

After 8 years on the "hard", with little TLC, and 3 years in the water - never leaving the dock, having received many valuable suggestions from the many knowledgeable members of this forum over the last three years and the help of Brian, from Shipwright Harbor, Deale, MD, I just moved my 45 year...

Hole in Range-4 Turbo output "L"

FYI! I found a used replacement "L" and it has a metal extrusion with a plug in it extending from where I have a hole. I don't need to attach anything to my exhaust output, so, I just drilled and tapped at 5/8" and put a plug in it. Then I sealed the "v" clamp joint with high temp exhaust gasket...

Broken T6.354 Range 4 Oil Dip Stick - HELP

Thanks for your input. The end of the dipstick is about 3/4" long x 1/4" wide x 1/16" thick. I think there is a screen on the oil pick-up line in the oil sump. I would hope that would catch the metal. Wouldn't the oil pump be after the oil filter? My filter is up-side down, so it drains back...

    Leaking Upper Helm Aluminum Top

My upper helm and aft doghouse cover is fabricated of welded square aluminum tubing with pop riveted aluminum sheeting, covering the frame. It is strong and can be walked upon without issue. While installing insulation enclosed by pvc bead board to the underside of the aft doghouse cover, I...

    Isolating batteries

Thanks for all of the expertise and suggestions evident in the responses. I read an interesting blog from a Combiner Company Site. KISS was the primary message. I'm thinking - use my current switching arrangement to combine the two start batteries by keeping the switches in the both position...

    Isolating batteries

I have two engine alternators, two start batteries and one house battery. The start batteries are isolated/combined/controlled by two battery switches and can be attached to Port, Starboard, or Both engines. The House battery is isolated, with no cabling connected to the start batteries. I want...

    Alternator Performance Question

On a recent move to a new marina, I noted that one of my two engine alternators was not working. To keep both start batteries + the house battery charged, I combined the two start batteries using the battery switches - set to both - and the house battery with a jumper cable. My Port alternator...

Broken T6.354 Range 4 Oil Dip Stick - HELP

Anybody know where I can buy one? Mine is broken off just below the max full line. If you don't I will get a piece of steel welded on to match my other engines dip stick. Thanks

    Fuel Filter Gasket Challenge

Why change fuel filters each year??? Before the season starts, I run my set of Racor 1000's (with 2 micron filters) polishing system a few hours on each fuel tank to get any "gunk" or water out, then all fuel goes through the Racor 1000s before it gets to the on-engine filters. I pulled the...

    Fuel Filter Gasket Challenge

Fuel Filter Change Difficulty Thanks for the information. I've tried that approach. But once the filter gets within about 3/4 inch of the base, I have to remove my fingers and the top gasket immediately falls down on top of the filter. I am wondering if I am using the correct technique to get...

    Fuel Filter Gasket Challenge

I am changing out the fuel filters on my two T6-354 Range 4s. I checked a video and the mechanic just pushed the top gasket/o-ring up into the base and it stayed:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: My top o-ring/gaskets just fell out. (They were the correct (larger) o-ring/gasket of the 3...

Hole in Range-4 Turbo output "L"

Some time back I experienced some exhaust coming from my insulation covered port turbo exit flange. Upon closer look I found major deterioration to the bolts, flange, etc. I removed the "L", replaced a couple of studs in the turbo exit flange, and cleaned up the "L". I reinstalled and...

Unreliable starting on Perkins Range 4's

Clean oxidation on old copper wires I cleaned up the oxidation on the port engine start/kill circuits thru the lower helm and she started instantly. I still need to complete the upper helm, but even from the upper helm both engines start immediately, now. Lessons learned - 1. On old boats -...

    Morse cables not working

Mis-communication was the biggest problem There was a mis-communication between the helper moving the levers and the individual in the engine room assessing the problem. In some instances the helper was moving transmission levers when engine room thought they were moving throttle levers. The...

Unreliable starting on Perkins Range 4's

Thanks for all of your expertise. I bought two mechanics remote starter buttons - one each for starter & kill solenoids. I attached the remote starter button first to the starter solenoid on the starboard engine and got instant start, then moved back - one step at a time - thru the start...

Help! The starters are not the problem - it's the wiring!!!!

When I push the start buttons, my perkins' starters sometimes turn, other times don't. I used two remote starter buttons to start and stop the engines from the engine room. They both start immediately when I attach the buttons directly to the solenoid terminals, the neutral safety switches, and...

    Morse cables not working

Strange Morse Cable Symptoms Thanks for your suggestion. I will execute later today. Just a comment. I noticed upon initially moving the lower helm control lever that the upper helm lever moves as if connected to the lower helm, yet the throttle does not move. This suggests to me there is a...

Situation: I have two terrific old perkins. I have an upper helm and lower helm, with 4 morse control heads.
