NYT Article HERE (paywall :() describing modern version of Blackbeard. Oil tankers not just turning off their AIS to avoid detection, but apparently transponding fake locations. While some of the ships are moving oil from Russia to China and not subject to western sanctions, the insurance companies covering the ships are western companies and thus prevented from covering them. NYT alerted the insurance company to the fake location - they were previously unaware.

Interesting technology to spoof location of a ship, not just a cheating spouse. Wonder where this goes????

I've tuned in ADS-B and AIS, but of course never did any spoofing experiments.

Yup a longstanding and pervasive problem. Used by mega yachts, smugglers, paramilitaries and military as well as commercial craft.
Back to sonar bouy and radar fencing supplemented by various emf detectors but such systems may lack personal identifiers.
Think we the public don’t know the half of it. Wife’s nephew is a private contractor (past military). Very closed mouth but there’s obviously an ongoing cyber war with both private business and military implications. Think many of these vessels are identified but there are unintended consequences for transferring information as it would disclose capabilities. Believe transfer and coordination with private sector is occurring to control spoofing as well as similar technologies. Beyond oil and gas the other major concern is shipping of products to support military technologies and enforcement of related sanctions.
