Do any of you know exactly what unit this is. It’s been painted with multiple coats by previous owner. I’m not the owner of this boat but have been asked to try and get things working. I know the Windlass is old. The boat was built in 1976. it has the wiring disconnected. There is one deck switch. I know some windlass’s can be reversed to raise and lower anchor. Probably this one cant be. I tried to find info on this on another site but ran into multiple replies.Some said it was a Muir, some said it was a Nilsson 3000 which does look simular but I can get any info from Nilsson in regards to repair etc. Need to know ampage draw, service etc. Hope one of you has an idea.
 
It would be easier to identify if you attached a picture.

There's bound to be someone who can ID your windlass. But if ever there was a post that cried out for a picture.....

Welcome aboard. What was said above, no photo and it didn’t happen. There are hundreds of windlasses out there…
 
If you suspect a Muir, search their site https://muir.com.au/. I`m in Australia, fan of Muir products, which are serviceable but not cheap.

At post 1 you can have trouble attaching a pic, knowledge alone, oryou may need a Moderators permission. But a pic is probably the only way.

There is a Muir which looks similar but it`s a recent addition to their range of more elongated horizontal models.

My guess is it`s not a Muir. No markings on the gypsy??
I expect it operates on freefall controlled by the gypsy brake/lock wheel and is powered retrieve only, which should work ok, once it works again.

I have the younger cousin of your Nillsan winch, the H700

A great unit from its era.

No longer built, but parts can be had from JamesNilsson. They are super slow to answer, but if anything exists in parts they have it.

The motor can be rebuilt by a competent shop, but due to the heavy windings etc, the rebuild cost can be quite expensive.

Rarely Ebay will have something, but usually pretty beat up.

In my case, I got 14 years of service out of mine before the moter crapped out - which is pretty good.

your winch is dramatically more of a unit than mine, so with proper care and feeding should have long life.

The huge drawback is the split-case design. This requires unbolting from the deck to disassemble or even inspect the inards.

As my winch choose to give up the ghost in the middle of the season last year leaving me with the option of a 3-4 week timeframe for rebuild, I instead bought a new Lewmar unit to replace it with.

Absolutely love the new unit as it has a removable rear cover when it becomes time to do maintenance, this without unbolting from the deck.


I am having the old motor rebuilt and will re-assemble the unit for resale on Craigslist or other.

Wonder if you guys can tell me how this unit works. I assume you release the brake thats on the right side, then this will release the chain. There is only one deck switch for the up. Where the brake is there is a button or shaft in the middle. What exactly is this. Should it move in or out.
Also the screw on left of the unit. Takes a big slotted screw driver. If i remove this will this let me take off this rope side to see what the bearing looks like.

Pretty sure it operates like my smaller unit.

chain is let out by freefall - loosen the wheel on the right side with the chain gypsy.

Retrieval is made by tightening the same wheel. (incidentally, this mechanism is serviced by removing the tightening mechanism and clutch cones etc - should keep track of them while removing for easy reinstall.

A bit of grease when it all goes back together.

Concerning the rope side, yes the screw allows you to remove it. There are no accessible bearings by doing this however.

The only way to inspect bearings, motor, gearbox includes removing the entire unit from the deck, then splitting the case by removing the several bolts and acorn nuts and separating.

I have an H700 (original equipment on my 1989 CHB Present) that is still operating, but lately the chain jumps out of the gypsy. I contacted Grant at Nilsson. He suggests that the gypsy may be worn, but they don’t have any replacement. The chain also jams occasionally at the chain pipe.
Have you had these issues? Could it also be that the chain is rusty (new in 2016) or the links have stretched (have had some white knuckle storms while anchored).
Questions:
Is your gypsy in good shape? Is it available?
Which model Lewmar did you replace it with?
I also need a replacement stripper blade. Do you have one available.

You may have already reviewed this, but I received notice that I may not have been logged in. Anyway, I wrote to say that I have an H700 that works well but lately the chain has been jumping out of the chain wheel (gypsy). I communicated with Nilsson and they thought th gypsy May be worn but they don’t have a replacement. Issue may also be due to stretched or rusty links.
Would your H700 be available for parts if you haven’t already had the motor rewound? I also need to replace the stripper blade.
