Hire a craftsman to build new lower helm pod?

Fully understand. What about converting to this up in the valance? If I am reading it correctly, it is a “vertical” compass. That would eliminate it on top of the helm. https://www.nauticexpo.com/prod/ritchie-navigation/product-21872-267147.html

Hire a craftsman to build new lower helm pod?

Enclosing the valance may not be too big a job for a DIY project, if you decide it is worth it. The width of the valance opening would dictate whether it might be worth it to enclose. Hinging the new bottom to it would allow for updating equipment, etc. We had a discussion recently about...

Funny isn’t it? Sitting here just enjoying the boat. 75 degrees, came down planning to do more than I did. Just completely at ease. Nice evening.

Wow, a hard top! That would be good looking, What did you finally decide on solar panels for Hold Fast? That may be something we decide to do down the road a little.

External AIS unit fault: Antenna VSWR fault

AIS transmit at around 162 mhz. You mentioned the antenna you are using for AIS is 158 mhz. I have a Cortex and am using a 159 mhz which services both AIS and VHF. Maybe not worth replacing, but if it continues you may want to consider getting an antenna made for AIS.

    Helmsman Hacks

Yes it has. It works really well. The mesh screen below it works to cushion it and to ventilate.

Having owned a Helmsman 38E for a bit, one thing comes to mind that may be a suggestion a future new build may want to consider. If I were building a 38E today, I would think about changing the layout of the day head. I would consider eliminating the ER door, and place the toilet there. I would...

There is a port side and a starboard fuel tank that are not interconnected. There is also a port and a starboard water tank which is interconnected. Running with a slightly lower amount of fuel in the starboard tank corrected it for me. Something to consider as you use the boat.

We noticed the same, and addressed it through fuel balancing, also. The two isolation transformers are also on the starboard side. That would also probably contribute, though the hot water tank is on the port side and should offset the IT’s to some degree.

    Starlink on a Helmsman

That is a good solution for a mast. I am still considering where to place my flat panel. The immediate thought is on the arch. I have the clearance to place it below the radar beam. I have the Helmsman supplied light standard and a custom Seaview 7.5” radar mount to get the radar beam above the...

I agree. A schedule leads to mistakes, and also leads to frustration. I am really glad we chose to wait.

Helmsman43 and I just completed a 140 mile trip up river on the Mishy Jean. She performed well! We went through three locks on the way. We had to stop after the first day due to tornado warnings. We had a late start that day, so we did just 40 miles. That turned out to be a fortunate choice...

    The New Helmsman 46

Your build will be fun to follow. I like the layouts for it, and think it is going to be an awesome boat. With your experience on a 38, and the Helmsman guys quality build and support, I bet it will be a really cool result. I can’t wait to see the build progress!
