    Adding cleats to my boat

The way we do it is we leave the lines and fenders at the home dock. The boat ends are attached to hooks about 5 feet up on the dock posts. As we pull up, we reach over, pull the line off the hook and tie off the boat. The lines are set at just the right length for our slip, and so they never...

    Starlink on a Helmsman

That is set up to market to the commercial maritime market. It encompasses two satellites. What most cruisers would opt for is the RV portability dish. On the Starlink facebook group, there was a comment from someone who had their dish stop working. Starlink purportedly replied that the dishes...

Do experts recommend separate inverters and chargers?

What did you get? I don’t see an attachment.

Two questions re: refrigeration use when cruising & Novakool specific ?

Thanks for the report back. That will help others with the same issue. I guess the marine fridges have a trade off between energy used versus cooling capacity which makes sense to me.

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

I was surprised by how adamant she was about the “need for speed”. She is usually all about the finishes on a boat! It will be interesting to see if she even cares once we are underway. The fact is that the higher HP motors run extremely well at lower speeds too. :)

    Starlink on a Helmsman

One other way to secure it would be to run a line from the rail on one side to the rail on the other and zip tie to it.

    Starlink on a Helmsman

I think it is a good idea to wait to see if Starlink comes up with a boat version of theRV/residential unit. I will order one this fall, and will probably set it up on the pilot house roof temporarily with suction cups. I will run the wire through a window. I won’t use under way, so taking ups...

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

Nick, you made some great choices. Congratulations! I think that interior layout will become a popular option for folks moving forward. I like the idea of the extended bedroom and larger shower, and head. Opinions differ, but I am on the side of one stateroom. A friend of mine is building a 43...

    Alternator advice needed

You had stated earlier that you were getting 2 something volts out of your alternator after taking your boat out. After you complete the tests I posted earlier, if you still have the same result, then I would suspect your isolator. Specifically, I would suspect the ignition connection. The...

    Alternator advice needed

They are Victron’s answer to the Promariner FET isolator. I don’t know anything about them. If you were to get one, you would want the two battery output version. They sell them in 100 amp and 200 amp versions. Make sure that you get the one that has more amperage than your alternator.

    Alternator advice needed

One thing that I am not clear on is whether you ever measured the voltage arriving from the isolator AT the two battery banks. Do not turn the generator on for this. Start the engine. Check the voltage at the alternator. Record it. Check the voltage at the isolator posts for each post that...

    Alternator advice needed

Are you measuring the voltage at the battery? Was the voltage at the battery banks connected to the isolator 14.14 without the generator or shore power on? If so, you are receiving a charge from the alternator. Was it also providing a charge in excess of 14 when you direct connect to a battery...

    Alternator advice needed

If you have a Dc to DC, that is better than ACR because it can adjust the charge being sent to the downstream bank.

    Alternator advice needed

Maybe it has been suggested, but if you need to replace the isolator, I would probably just get ACR to put between the banks, or a DC to DC if you have different battery chemistries, since it looks like you have just two banks charging.

    Alternator advice needed

Ok. I didn’t see the second photo. The alternator relies on a complete circuit from the alternator through the isolator, and on to the batteries and then to the negative bus bar. If that is circuit is interrupted, has a high resistance, or the FET’s in the isolator are defective, then the...

    Alternator advice needed

If you look at the picture of the isolator you posted above, in the bottom left hand corner you will see the post for the ignition wire and the b- post supporting it. There isn’t a wire on either one of them. If you have already connected them into the ignition circuit since you took that...

    Alternator advice needed

I wouldn’t be able to answer why it isn’t in the manual. That would be a question for ProMariner. On the picture you showed earlier, you have one output on the Promariner 1-3 that is open. The issue that this creates, according to ProMariner when I called them about the same situation with...

    Alternator advice needed

Before you do that, I would connect the ignition wire as the Promariner folks suggest and add the jumper. That fixed my charging issues.

    Alternator advice needed

I may have the jumper wire I had on my isolator that bridged one of the occupied output posts to the unoccupied one. I will look tomorrow. If I still have it, you are welcome to it.

Here is a manual I found online. Look at page 9 for the wiring diagram. https://newcontent.westmarine.com/documents/pdfs/OwnersManuals/ELECTRICAL/353134-36044.pdf Look at page 5 under “General”, the first bullet: “Provide the required connection from the key switch and the negative DC...

    Alternator advice needed

This post from another forum discusses the same situation I ran into with the same solution recommended by ProMariner. The post also mentioned a filter ProMariner sent to me that I had forgotten about. My isolator started working again after that for awhile. I ended up replacing it about a year...

    Alternator advice needed

I had a ProMariner isolator which distributed power to three battery sets.. You are using two of the three outputs. Check the manual, but I think the problem you are having may be because you don’t have a jumper from one of the two you are using to the open one. I think I remember you stating...

Two questions re: refrigeration use when cruising & Novakool specific ?

I don’t know. Haven’t looked at the specs. I do believe it is the same size. The only other issue I can think of is the electricity usage and whether the wires, breakers and/or fuses are the right gauge for it. Probably are, but I would look at it. I would give NovaKool a call. They were...
