    Cruising Bahamas

There is a nice blog site with a nice map function called FindPenguins.com. We have used it for family access to travels in the past and people seem to like following it. Jim

    Nordhavn 40...lack of side decks

I have a boat with one side deck and one side without (Nordy 47) and I thought that docking would be easier on the side with the walk-around. Turns out there is minimal difference. We put the fenders on from above (boat deck) on both sides so no real difference there. My wife is always on the...

    Alwood Application Process?

I let the primer sit overnight. Then sand and apply as many coats of gloss as light and drying allow without sanding. Then final 2 coats sand and thin with reducer. We found the thinning made a smoother flow so very little sanding was needed for the final coat.

    Sikkens Cetol Product and Application?

Long time Cetol user switched to Awlwood and found it lasted longer and has very little problem with water getting under it around edges or dings. Would not go back. Only downside is price but make it up first year or two by not having to do much maintenance

    Do You Book Slips Online?

We use the apps a lot on the East Coast and don't seem to have any of the problems that are mentioned here. Never had a non-response and usually complete the process online without ever having to call. I just wish more marinas would use them. I do usually plan on staying somewhere a day or two...

For Sale: Yamaha 8 hp outboard 2-stroke short shaft

It was a good one when we were sailors as well. We have been able to increase our size a bit with the new trawler so this one needs a good home. Thanks, Jim

Garmin chartplotter auto-guidance won't work with Simrad Pilot

Two things for those that use Furuno nav pilots as an AP. There is an advanced setting for the Nav control that has three options (names may not be correct but easy to recognize): 1. Go to waypoint 2. X-trac aggressive (or precision) 3. X-trac gentle. 1. Just keeps a straight line to...

    Back-up Engine?

Check with the Torqueedo service center. They did a software update for mine that seemed to make it much better. I had a pretty old one so it may not apply to yours but it was the same symptom. Jim

    "Downeast" boats at anchor

Thanks for the general and specific comments. I have read about the “slap” from others but thought that could probably be overcome if the rest of the experience was okay. My main concern was just not seeing many of these boats when we used to live aboard, out in the anchorage with us. They...

    "Downeast" boats at anchor

My wife and I just sold our 50 ft motorsailer and were thinking of going to a smaller, faster, shallower draft boat for the waterways and rivers of northern Florida where we live. We were thinking Back Cove, Sabre, other so-called downcast type boats in the 40-ish ft range. After missing our...

    Sanitation system reno

Second this. With this setup one spare pump can be carried that covers either failure. I needed it on a trip to Bahamas and was glad I had it because as soon as I got the discharge pump fixed the vacuum pump went out so I was able to use the repair as spare. Jim

    Lithium Batteries By Smart

Add 50,000 each year for The Leaf and the Volt and there are a lot of big battery packs being used a lot more then people use their boats and doing it very safely. I suspect if the price were to go down a lot of our "safety" concerns would too. :-) Jim
