    Winterizing Engines and Boat

My CAT take 10 gallons of RV Antifreeze before I get solid pink from the exhast. I would expect the Cummins to be similar. I figure there is about 5 gallons of water in the engine, muffler and hoses that needs to be pushed out and then replaced with another 5 gallons of antifreeze. Also be...

Link 2000-R / Keep or get rid of

We have a 1980's Heart Freedom 10 with a link 2k. Both still going strong, and no problems pushing both of our AC only refrigerators. I have abused that inverter to death, had it smoking once and it still keeps ticking. The oldies were goodies..

I got a sore butt watching that video - I didn't see a single cushion anywhere!

Yep. Niagara Falls sees to that..

    Wide Open Throttle

Well, if you want to shoot the Niagara into Lake Erie, you have to fight. The river is at is narrowest width right at the Peace Bridge, and the water never slows down on it's way to Niagara Falls. There is a canal that runs parallel to the river to avoid the current, but we would rather just...

    Wide Open Throttle

Not quite, it's about 15 miles down river.

    Wide Open Throttle

How about fighting a 10-15 knot current on the Niagara River? We run our CAT 3116 at WOT for about 10-15 minutes to clear the the mouth of the river into Lake Erie. Sure, we can take the Black Rock bypass canal, but that is a pain, one lock and two lift bridges as opposed to a straight shot...

    Welcome Yahoo Mainshippers

I haven't posted on the Mainship group in years, too hard to navigate that mess and now it is full of adds as well. I joined the group in 2003, back then it was much simpler and easier to use. BTW, you can turn off email from the Mainship Yahoo group as well, there is a setting somewhere for...

    Porthole rain shields wanted

Try here: http://www.seaworthygoods.com/ We bought covers from them 4 years ago, they have held up great. We leave our portholes open all the time now, no rain gets in and the boat stays ventilated. Highly recommend!

    Erie Canal Observations

Maybe we will catch up with you next year if you decide to return. If things work out, we will be living on our boat next summer full time with plenty of time to cruise the canal.

Where do you stow your dinghy engine

Dump it in the water. Has never been a problem yet.

Where do you stow your dinghy engine

On the dink. Both ride nicely on the swim platform, no davits needed.

    Coolant additive

Our CAT 3116 is one of these engines. We converted about 7 years ago to the Extended Life Coolant, rating is CAT EC-1. This newer coolant is good for 5 years with no SCA additives needed. To convert, a few good flushes with fresh water is all that is needed.

    Get Me Home Power

Not sure if I want to lug around a spare starter, but the one of the most important spare parts for a diesel are FILTERS. We have a single CAT, 2000+ hours and have never needed assitance getting home.

    New Genset suggestions

Generator access on our Mainship 350 is the same as the OP - AWFUL. There really is no other place to mount a genset on these boats except under the cockpit floor between the two water tanks. I would suggest downsizing your next genny to make access to it a bit easier. A 4 or 5kw would be...

    Chris Craft Today

I think the late model Chris-Craft launches are gorgeous boats, and their price tag reflects that. I see quite a few of them around here with the pretty blue hulls.

    Merged:Northern Yacht/Oops

Boat looks top heavy, but I think it will come down to the method of launch, not the boat that caused it to capsize. If they had used a crane with slings we would not be discussing this today. Dollies were too small, one of the stern supports gave way while the bow was still out of the the...

    Mainship 390 transom hatch.

How about fabricating one yourself out of plywood, then just finish it with fiberglass or just paint it?

    Mainship 390 transom hatch.

Try taking the remaining hatch cover to a shop that does fiberglass repair/fabrication and have them make a mold and new hatch off that one.

    Lower Helm Station

Lower helm is great on very cold or very hot days. Fire up the genny and relax in a heated or cooled salon while you are piloting. Also better in rough water, don't get thrown around as much when you are lower in the boat. That being said, we do use the flybridge helm station most of the...

    Padded folding deck chairs

We have one of the stainless steel ones and they are heavy as heck. PIA lifting it out of the cockpit to the dock when I need to do a wash down. If I were to buy another, it definitely would be the aluminum.

    RPMS on Cat 3208TA

I know these are V8 models, but if they are set up similar to our 3116 TA, the turbo is just starting to spool at 1600, we can run forever at that rpm. Our normal operating speed is 1600-2000, max RPM is 2800. As Peter says, the CATS are great engines, ours always starts immediately, runs...
