    Stern Thruster Question

Hey everyone! I have a question about my stern thruster and am hoping someone in the hive mind can answer. I have a Side Power SP95 on my 2007 MS 34T. I recently had it removed from the boat to have the electrical motor repaired which went well and everything checks out like new again. After I...

    Cruise speed for ms350/390

I have a 2007 34 Trawler with a single Yanmar (315hp) and cruse at 2300 rpm which gets me 7kts and burns 2.5 Gallons/hour. WOT gets me about 10kts, but that’s burning a lot of fuel and is loud.

MS 34 Trawler - was there a factory "Stairwell Cover"

I have a 07 34T and have a rudder angle indicator on the bridge. I also saw this posted on a FB forum, it was a custom design that looks good and I may investigate having one made.

MS 34 FB Trawler fuel sender(s)

I have a 2007 Mainship 34 Trawler and there is a switch at the lower helm to go between the two gauges, it will not read on both at the same time.

    Yanmar Fuel Shut off Solenoid

I believe I got it at our local auto shop, it’s not specific to Yanmar and has a part # or diagram on the part. I believe it was a fairly common part an did not have difficulty finding one locally. Rob

    Outlet A/B Switch

So I have been watching this closely as I would like to do the same. The difference is my inverter is old (15 years) so likely does not support pass through. Will this permit me to power a few outlets to run on both shore and inverted power (I think yes). Seems like a simple fix at a reasonable...

    Alternator Wiring Issue

Yes you are correct and the purple wire in the picture does just this as well as supply power to the new external regulator.

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Well that sure would fix the problem and well worth looking into, thanks for the info much appreciated.

    Alternator Wiring Issue

I believe the gauges do come to life, at least the oil pressure alarm and glow plugs do for sure. I’m starting to think it’s an issue with the switch and not wiring as the spot where the post is missing says SEN on it so I’m thinking that was only a voltage sensing line for the internal...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

The reason the fuse blows when the thrusters are activated, the current draw is seen by the charging wire from the alternator (with no isolator in place). Because there is a delay in opening the switch the draw from the thrusters through the charging (positive) wires suppling both the house and...

    Alternator Wiring Issue

Good day I am asking this for a friend who is having an issue getting his boat to start after having his existing alternator converted to run with a Balmar ARS-5 regulator. For some reason after the shop finished the conversion and added the connectors for the new regulator there is a post on...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Well I thought about that however I didn’t think they would disconnect quick enough when the thrusters were working to prevent pulling power from the house bank through the alternator charging cables. Unless I’m missing something (or more likely not understand correctly) there would still be a a...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

I originally didn’t want to have the isolator but in order to have the alternator charge both the hoist and thruster banks I found I needed one. If I connect both banks together then operate the thrusters they pull sooooo much power that the fuses on my house bank pop. It pulls power through the...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Yes sorry for not making that clear my isolator is a new Victorian so basically no voltage drop across it.

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Ok so went down to the boat flashed it up and put a meter from the negative at the alternator and the negative on the house bank. Then I functioned both thrusters and watched the meter… nothing more than 0.03v so I don’t think this was the issue that DDW suggested above. Anyway I. Just going to...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Ok i will give your first test a try but won’t bother with the second one ?. I’m not exactly sure what to do if this turns out to be a ground issue. From what I can see both the thruster and house share the same ground and I don’t know how I would go about isolating them. Honestly I could...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Ok so please excuse the quality of the drawing but I hope this can help describe my system. - The isolator is a new Victron 250A two battery isolator - Alternator is a Balmar 150A - regulator is a Balmar ARS-5 If I move the power and ground wires from the alternator to the battery posts then...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Yes I was thinking exactly the same thing however when I put the clamp meter on the line and hit the thrusters I briefly saw 18A before the fuse popped. Without touching the thrusters it nominally shows 4ish amps. I will draw a little schematic of how the system is wired showing the battery...

Balmar ARS-5 vs MC 618 Regulators

Good day everyone and Merry Christmas! I currently have a Balmar ARS-5 external regulator working my Balmar 150A alternator. I have gone through the advanced programming and I believe I have it where it should be. After a couple years of running it the only thing I can’t seem to do is have the...

    Balmar ARS-5 fuse issues

Thanks for that info, I was not aware of the max 6A production through the field coil. I did go back to the repair shop and ask what exactly they had done to ensure it was not something on their end. They said all they did was replace the terminal blocks inside the alternator and there was no...

    Balmar ARS-5 fuse issues

Sooo as things are on boats nothing is as simple as you first think. We headed out today for a quick overnight and wouldn’t you know it but the fuse went again. Did a bit more troubleshooting and found that it goes whenever I use my bow/stern thrusters. I’m still a bit confused but this is what...

    Decided on a 34T

I have a 07 trawler and am in Victoria so if your ever over here let me know and I will try to get you a tour. We love ours and find the storage plenty although we have not spent more than a couple weeks at a time on her (we plan to just have to retire first). It’s a single yanmar which is nice...
