    Balmar ARS-5 fuse issues

Ok so went down to the boat today to do a bit of troubleshooting. Checked the regulator for a short and it checked out ok. Then checked the harness and bam! Found a short in the power supply. I tried to find out where it was and could not find it. Both ends are connected directly to the + and -...

    Balmar ARS-5 fuse issues

Good day hive mind! I have a question I’m hoping someone may be able to help me with. I am running a ARS-5 external regulator combined with a Balmar 150A alternator. This weekend we were out for a couple nights and I had to replace the 10A in-line fuse three times. Obviously there is something...

    Alternator Hack!

Saw this in a FB group and thought it was worth sharing as I have recently had to make modifications to my alternator bracket so I could use a slightly larger belt. If I had thought or knew about this I would have given it a try, it’s so simple. Rob

    Balmar ARS-5 Programing

Thanks for that, it’s a great article and I have now set my absorption time to 4hrs which should help things. I will study this more and make some adjustments as I move along. Thanks again Rob

    Balmar ARS-5 Programing

Looking for assistance from the hive mind again. I believe I need to tweak my Balmar ARS-5 external regulator settings but am not sure which ones to tinker with. The regulator is switching to float too early in the charge cycle (in my opinion anyway). I have been out cruising for a few days and...

Multiple charge inputs to batteries . . .

This is how I would think it should work but I’m no expert. I have a 675Ah battery bank with a 60A shore charger and a 150A alternator. When I charge the bank with the engine it will easily push out 120A and charge fairly quickly. If I was to add a second 50A shore charger to the system and...

    Negotiations After Oil Samples

We are bringing the boat back to its new spot today, it’s about a 5hr motor. And we will be certainly paying attention to how it feels during the transit. I will let you know how things go and what my buddy decides to do after it’s all settles in the new slip. Thanks again Rob

    Negotiations After Oil Samples

Well the seller agreed to a 50/50 split on the 5K estimate to replace the transmission. My friend is now a boat owner and is looking at having the tranny fixed/replaced based on availability of parts (his model has been discontinued). Thanks again for the info/opinions, I love the feedback on...

    Negotiations After Oil Samples

The engine has around 16-1800hrs from what I was told. A conversation with the mechanic today indicated that his opinion was to change/repair ASAP based on both the oil sample and what he observed during the inspection. During the sea trial I didn’t notice any issues with shifting or slippage...

Ok so that picture sucks! I will try again with espérât pictures of each section on the report. Best I can do until I get home and on a proper computer.

    Negotiations After Oil Samples

Hope this works, I have attached a screenshot of the transmission oil sample hopefully it’s readable. Thanks for the input so far, my buddy is going to negotiate based on an estimate from the mechanic and then if all agree take the boat this weekend. We may just change, flush all oil and...

    Negotiations After Oil Samples

Hey everyone! I’m asking for a friend who is in the final process of buying a boat. He has just got the results back for the transmission oil sample and the mechanic recommended a rebuild/replacement. He wants to move forward with the purchase and do the required repair however wants to...

    I made a big mistake

Ok so I let the batteries sit on charge for a week and they did come back but not to where I wanted them. The electrolytes were still on the low side so I took them in to a local shop for an equalization charge (my charger does not do that). Got them back today and they seem great, all cells are...

    I made a big mistake

Thanks Pete, I was trying to do what the technician at Balmar said to do by cycling my batteries down to between 10-11v. If I make it through this then I will simply leave it alone and hope it will calibrate it’s self just by being used. Take care Rob

    I made a big mistake

Yea this is a “smart” battery monitor and will calculate the health of the batteries once calibrated correctly.

    I made a big mistake

Ok so I believe I have made a big error which may cost me a new house bank. I was trying to cycle my house bank down to 10.5v to calibrate my Balmar SG200 monitor. Well I did it once and recharged to 100%. I then went to drain down a second time however it slipped my mind and accidentally...

    Lewmar Foot Switch

Im struggling to see the advantage of adding yet another way to control the windless. I already have three positions to work with (fly bridge, lower helm and locally at the windless). If I’m missing out on something let me know but at this point I will stick with my current setup. Rob

    Lewmar Foot Switch

Ok got it sorted and as was mentioned above the great wire is not used on my system only blue and black. Now to put it all back together ? Thanks for the help with this one Rob

    Lewmar Foot Switch

Both up and down are now sticking in the closed position and so I can’t use them. I was hoping the switch could be opened up and cleaned however the switch is a micro switch and not repairable.

    Lewmar Foot Switch

I will need to poke around a bit more to see how it’s currently wired. Honestly I thought it would be as simple as splicing in a new switch (??).

    Lewmar Foot Switch

Hey everyone I am in need of the hive mind. I need to replace my Lewmar foot switches and don’t know if the new versions will work with my windless. My local chandler has new switches in stock but could not tell me if they would be compatible with my system. I have an older system 2007ish and...

    Unique refrigerator

Thanks for the replies, I will be keeping it outside but under cover on the back deck just outside the door to the salon. I’m going to give it a try without the cover as I believe that the ease of getting in and out of it will out weigh the potential of better performance. Ultimately I would...

    Unique refrigerator

So I finally managed to secure the last 65L fridge/freezer unit from Unique, it’s a scratch and dent model but still in great shape. Delivery is expected this week, I have one question though. The cooler did not come with the cover so I was wondering if it is important to try and find one. The...
