Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Perkins. I had a Gulfstar with 2 4-235 80 hp four bangers that I loved. They ran great, easy to work on, easy to get parts. I could cruise all day at 7 kts and burn 3 gph total. Not a go fast boat, but reliable.

    350Q oil change

Getting ready to haul and winterize our 1975 35' Chris Craft Double Cabin with twin Marine Power 350Q engines. Engines are original with less than 3000 hours, and run strong. Any opinions about the best oil to use? The PO used a brand of racing oil that had a high zinc component.

Trawler wanna-be: What are fuel burn rates

35' Chris Craft aft cabin with twin 350Q gas engines. Just above idle, 6 mph, takes 3 gph total, or 2 mpg. 10 mph gets 10 gph, 1 mpg. I don't go faster than that. Readings verified by fuel flow meters on each engine. I find these numbers very acceptable for gas engines.

    Heads

RV head I installed an RV style head directly on top of a 30 gallon plasic tank. Used about a pint of fresh water each flush. Worked every time (gravity usually does). I mounted the tank with a slight aft and inboard lean to facility pumpout. Worked like a charm. The Admiral would use a...

    Geico Boat Insurance

Geico We lost our Mainship 34 to Florence. Had Geico through BoatUS. We purchased it in March, and had just completed prepping the boat for the Fall cruising season. I contacted them about the loss, and sent photos to show it sunk at it's slip. Weeks went by without hearing anything...

    8v53n

Lost my Mainship 34 to Florence, so the hunt begins again for a boat. Looking at some with Detroit 8V53N diesels. Looking for thoughts, experiences, warnings about these. All my previous boats had Perkins. Thanks.

    Gulfstar trawler

I had a 73 Mk1 Gulfstar for about 3 years. The hull is solid glass, and almost bullet proof. The decks are balsa cored. Expect to find spongy spots anywhere hardware was installed, either screwed in or through bolted. The fittings will leak, and the balsa will turn to mush. If caught early...

Any info on this boat? Is the owner a member here?

I called about that boat last year. I told the broker that Taiwan boats of that vintage are know for leaking fuel tanks, spongy decks, leaking windows and rotted wood. He said I described it pretty accurately. At the time it was a live aboard for an elderly gentleman, so condition of the...

    Mainship dip stick?

I mentioned in the original post that I plan to dip the tank from the fill port on deck. There is very little clearance between the top of the tank and the salon deck, and it's really un-accessable from the ER. The PO put down a real nice hard wood floor in the salon. Unfortunately, he didn't...

    Mainship dip stick?

I have doubts about the accuracy of my new-to-me 1978 Mainship mk1 fuel gauges. My former Gulfstar had a dip stick in the main tank that worked like a charm. After pulling a side panel, it looks to me that the fuel fill hose has gentle enough curves to allow an articulated dip stick to sound...

    1978 Mainship 34 prior owner?

Cleaning up my new to me boat I discovered that it was once called "Off Line" home ported in Punta Gorda, Florida. She's serial number 150. Any chance a forum member once owned her?

    Mainship port lights

I need to replace the four original ports on our 1978 34 Mk1 trawler. I believe they are made by Beckson, but I'm not sure how to measure to get the proper size. The "glass" area is 7 x 14 in the galley and head, and 6 x 12 in the forepeak. Is this the right measurement, or is it the overall...

    Active Captain Discontinuation

I use MXMariner (purchased 2 years ago from A/C) on a tablet as my sole chart plotter. Active Captain is used in trip planning for marinas mostly. Most hazards seem to be mis-marked or non existent. Take everything with a grain of salt.

    1978 Mainship 34

Hello friends. Good to be back on the forum. We just bought a 78 Mainship 34, #150, from a private seller on Craig's list. It was repowered in 93 with a Perkins range 4 M240Ti. Tranny replaced in 99, and until a few years ago, lovingly maintained. Bridge deck, cockpit, and rear door have...

    Hp from SN?

Is it possible to determine the hp of an engine from the serial number? Specifically, a Perkins T6-354. The number is TU33247U850169W. The owner says it has 240hp. I know these started at 165 and went up over time. From Boatdiesel charts I learned that the engine was built in the UK in...

    Gas power choices

Some Trojan owners report cruising at 15 to 18 kts and burning 18 to 20 gph. That gets close to 1mpg, which seems to be a goal for gas engines. I would think running at 10 kts would improve efficiency, but only if you're not wallowing along bow high. I still have to learn about trim tabs and...

    Gas power choices

Times change, life goes on. We sold our Gulstar 36 last September in Sheboygan, WI, having decided that living aboard full time wasn't for us. By the way, the boat is for sale on Yachtworld in St. Petersburg Fl. Overpriced for what it is. We now live in New Bern, N.C. We miss the cruising...

For Sale: Gulfstar 36 for sale

Man plans, God laughs. After two and a half years of prep work, we have to give up our Gulfstar after 3 months on the loop. The boat is in Sheboygan, Wisconsin at Harbor Center Marina. Online views at skipperbuds.com, #B14220. $23,500. I did everything I could to make the boat reliable...

    Which diesel engines

I also have the Perkins 4-236 and like them. I did lose a main fuel injection pump last year. The engine had 2550 hours, but was 43 years old. I guess it was time. This year, prior to moving aboard and looping, I had the other injection pump overhauled for good measure. The exhaust elbow...

    What is 'cruising speed'

For a displacement boat, hull speed (most efficient) is computed at 1.34 x square root of the water line length. On my Gulfstar, a water line length of 33 feet gives me a theoretical hull speed of 7.69 knots. When I first got the boat, someone on this forum suggested to increase rpm 100 at a...
