Looking to buy a GS 43 MK II

Here's some info from the Gulfstar Owners Association group on facebook. Mostly sail people there, but a few of us trawler types. Some good reference files for engines there as well.

Looking to buy a GS 43 MK II

I have a 36 Mk1, but many of it's features are shared in the larger boats. I can get to the outboard side of each engine with a little patience and some wiggling. Once there, there is plenty of room to work. It's best to have a helper standing by for the tools you forget to take with you...

    Too much roll

The Gulfstar is going to roll no matter what. I would like to have bilge keels to dampen it, but haven't been able to determine if it would be practical or not. The steadying sail helps some, but she still rolls. If the fore cast is for more than 2-4 foot seas, we stay home. If we get caught...

    Too much roll

My mast is not supported from below. I believe the decking at the end of the fly bridge is cored with plywood, and that is the support for the mast. I haven't noticed any deforming of the bridge deck. I don't think the stresses involved would warrant having a keel-stepped mast. It wouldn't...

    Too much roll

My mast is located on the deck of the flying bridge. 4 stays support it fore and aft. It is hinged at the deck, and can be lowered easily by releasing the forward stays. Having the stay sail up helps some with the rolling, but in anything above 3 foot seas, it's not much fun.

Why Didn't I Think Of This Before Depratment

It always bugged me to have to leave the boat to shut off the city water before moving the hose, such as for washing or filling the tank. Wandering through the garden section of Lowes, I saw this plastic shut off valve made just for hoses. Less than $5.00. My my, how convenient now to move...

    Help...fresh water tank

The water tank should be under the galley deck. The water tank is forward, and the fuel tank is aft of the hatch. On my 73, the access hatch is inboard of the support leg for the dinette, which is on the starboard side. The galley is to port. I know some models have the galley to starboard...

    New TF Member

:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb: There are many choices in the 30-36 foot range. If you have the skills to repair or renovate, real bargains can be found. But it takes time. Other more "turn key" boats are available if you look for them. Good luck in the search!

    Boat Search 101

The best advice we ever got was "don't buy the biggest boat you can afford, buy the smallest you can live on." Also need to be honest with your want/need list. After some research and soul searching, many "needs" can turn out to be "nice to have" or blling.

    Copper plated props?

Both my props looked like the struts, with some previous coating flaking off. Stripped, sanded, and painted with Rust Oleum zinc cold galvanizing. I'll see how she looks in October at haul out.

    Perkins Fuel Injectors

Had a very pleasant surprise yesterday. I removed the injectors from my 1973 4-236 engines and took them to a shop for inspection/overhaul. 40 years old, about 3800 hours on them. All they needed was a little cleaning, bench-checked good to go. Only charged $64.00 for it. The guy said these...

    Coast Guard boardings

Polite and respectful is the order of the day in these cases. I try to operate and maintain my boat in a professional manner, and have no problem dealing with other professionals doing their job. An Ohio watercraft officer shared his story. One holiday weekend, he was doing random safety...

Where do you relax on your boat?

Fly bridge in good weather. Mid (poop?) deck above rear cabin also in nice weather (we call it the back porch) Lower helm / saloon otherwise, in the swivel rocker/foot stool. First Mate likes the couch/settee I built for lounging.

New to Trawlers just a old sailor

Welcome Aboard! We bought a "idled" boat and spent 2 years getting her ready to cruise. That first splash is worth all the work. Still things to do, but that's true of any boat. We'll fix the minor things of the fly.

Need help to ID this fuel shutoff solenoid

If it's a Perkins part and you have it's number, give Rich Kuhn a call at Hercules Engine Components - 800-345-0662 ext 101. Good guy to work with, they ship anywhere.

Old fat men and engine rooms

Plenty of head room when opened up. A deep bilge allows eye level access for some things. I can still crawl around to get to the outboard sides, but some days it's a struggle.
