    Wallcovering recommendations or tips?

Love wallpaper! Our boat's 1980s wallpaper is still perfect, and charmingly kitschy! We just papered another head: lots of options online. I recommend vinyl, prepasted paper. (Avoid the vinyl cling-on unless you're going for a temporary fix.) Change up your searches with different design...

    Boat Identification Help!

What year? That might at least help zero in on yards actively building at the time. HIN as described by Comodave above were required by the USCG in 1972; before then, there wasn't a consistent serial number format. In 1984, USCG required that it also be permanently inscribed (carved, burned...

    Otters

We saw Sea Otters in South Puget Sound some years ago on one of our first cruises but have never seen any since. River Otters, however, are residents at our marina. They are often on the docks at night but we've luckily not had them on our boat. Some notes: They like to sleep on neatly circled...

    Carpets in boats

Yes, I think I'd still choose carpet, and preferably wool as it handles the moisture, cleans, and wears well. My next preference would be teak. Marmoleum would be another consideration. If vinyl was there, or our chosen option for a new install, I'd make sure it was soft underfoot and non-slip...

    Carpets in boats

Our 51yo boat has 35yo(!!) high-end wool carpet in saloon and staterooms. The staterooms are cut to fit; the saloon is wall-to-wall with pad. The galley and heads are teak parquet (an 80s' upgrade from the original VCT tiles like in a 60s' classroom). We originally thought we'd remove all the...

    Teak paneling repair and replace

Creative, less-work solutions: If the panel is smooth or can be made so with light sanding, and you have a good eye for color, faux paint the discolored area with artists' acrylics to match surrounding color and grain detailing, then varnish to match sheen. Rather than irreversibly painting...

    Is Anyone Cruising Right Now?

Cruising PacNW Plenty of cruising going on in PacNW. Puget Sound and San Juan Islands are seeing record crowds at anchorages, marinas and parks (some with limited amenities), especially since, with the border closed, many boaters are unable to cross into BC or go up to Alaska as usual. There...

    Problem near Port Townsend?

Iwarden, I agree. It's a wooden, American Marine Grand Alaskan. From 1966 to 1971, American Marine built 30 hulls of the 46ft Alaskan designed by Arthur DeFever for a DeFever-commissioned production line. Oriental Boat Company built 26 hulls of the DeFever-designed 54ft Alaskan between 1971 and...

    ELVICA - DeFever's Trawler Prototype?

Elvica and Arthur DeFever Arthur DeFever was a naval architect who designed boats that were built by many yards in California, Mexico and Asia of wood, steel, aluminum and fiberglass. He designed fishing boats before WWII and, in 1959, his first "offshore cruiser" based on ocean-going work...

    Refinishing teak parquet?

I looked for parquet tiles that matched ours in 2012 and contacted: MARITIME Wood Products Corp. in Stuart, Florida USA 34997 (800) 274-TEAK www.TeakDecks.com mail@maritimewoodproducts.com Unfortunately, our pattern is Haddon Hall Basket Weave which they don't carry any more. Friends...

    Hello from Powell River

Welcome, RID, to the wooden DeFever club! We have a 1969 50ft wooden DeFever and are in the PacNW. Your boat is DeFever's design DF70-38 built by Oriental Boat Company in Taiwan. It was DeFever's fourth production line of wooden Offshore Cruisers, three of which were built at OBC. There were...

Can Somebody Tell Me What This Is.

Se chest on DeFevers Mr Rob - If you do buy this boat, I recommend that you join the DeFeverCruisers.com. The forum and topic files have covered sea chests often, along with other DeFever-specific information. Good luck!

    Whats your opinion?

Visually, I think the last one is easiest to read (without the pronunciation marks). You might also play with all caps - I experimented and bold Tempus Sans font in caps has a similar look. Maybe a little darker but the font size and weight will effect readability. Nice name! Good luck!

Question for perspective wood boat buyer

I, too, love wood trawlers and hope that caring stewards will continue to love and preserve them for their distinct qualities. Look, too, at early wooden DeFevers made by Lindwall (42'-60'), Oriental Boat Company (38' 2-cabin, 50' 3-cabin & 54' Alaskans), and 46' Alaskans by American Marine...

Query: Anyone switched trawler to Ranger Tug?

I've not been on a Ranger but we were docked behind a cute one, bow to stern on a transient dock. When wakes came through, the Tug rolled a good 30 degrees more in both directions than did our trawler. Decided right then we'd never be interested.

Teak deck coatings on old trawlers

Our 50-yr-teak decks are mostly original and in good shape. The side, trunk deck, and cockpit are natural silver. We rinse regularly with sea water when on-board seasonally, and mend caulking and bongs as needed. The bow had some teak repair done 15 years ago and was coated with Cetol. I mend...

    Bilge Paint

I 2nd use of ZINSSER white mold & mildew primer/paint on a boat, but we've not used it in the bilge. I've painted inside closets, bathrooms, drawers, and cupboards for an easy-to-apply, hard, washable finish. It leaves a nice satin finish that I like.

    Counter top options

Our '69 DeFever had 2" square blue tiles laid over the Formica counters in the '80s, with a decorative tile backsplash. I love the look, the color and the durability. They've held up beautifully except needing to be recaulked along the back edge. The fiddle still stands proud. Easy DIY project.

Should we remove this, or how to use it?

Some early (1960s) high-end trawlers have "whiskey boxes" that roll out from under the helm seat with cutouts for glasses and a custom ice bucket on the top shelf. The lower shelf has a removable box base with tailored cutouts to hold assorted shapes of liquor bottles. Not sure if it would be...

    Pondering a DeFever 66

Joining DeFever Cruisers Assoc would connect you to other owners of the same model. They also have an inventory which may tell you about this boat's past (or you can buy a title search from NOAA's boat registry for about $25). DCA has boats listed for sale, often before they hit YW and hosts...
