So I'm getting the message prompting me to download the app. Why do I want the app?

Approaching Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

I used to wonder what people with a billion dollars could possibly do with the money. After visiting the Lauderdale show, I have a better idea.

Solar Energy, Hybrid and Electric Cars

I drive a 2012 Volt. Love it. It's had three oil changes in 90,000 miles and one set of tires. Other than that, never been to the shop. When it wears out, I'll buy another. (It's fueled by domestic natural gas, some domestic coal, some domestic nuclear, and a fair bit of domestic wind...

Grand Banks 42' Classic or Motoryacht

Thanks. Trying to convince the wife that if we keep a boat a few years, we might sell it for about what we pay (33 years might be a little much, for us). The only thing worse than getting older is not getting older.

Grand Banks 42' Classic or Motoryacht

Yup, nice boat. Wonder what it sold for, new, in 1983? Any source for info like this?

    Lighter subject...coffee! :)

I use a Toddy coffee maker. Probably the same thing as the OP. Put a pound of ground coffee in, add cold water, let it sit 18 hours, drain the concentrate, then you have instant coffee for a week or so. The theory is that the cold water leaches out the flavors of the beans, but leaves behind...

Crossed Restricted Bar, Received CG Citation

I glanced at the CFR (posted above) and recall there was a formula involved that compared wave height and vessel length and freeboard (don't have it in front of me, now). So a bar might be closed to a 30' vessel but not to a 100' one. That might be the "case-by-case."

    Overboard discharge of holding tank.

I'm thinking about Incinolets. Pros - no plumbing, no holding tank, no overboard discharge, no plugs to clear, no thru-hulls. Cons - initial expense ($2k), hefty vent line, major power requirement (1.5kwh/use!), some owners have complained of noisy exhaust fan and odors.

    I quit lurking...

Can you recommend any unbiased reviewers? I'm not picking a fight; I'm really asking. Magazines that are running an ad for the boat being reviewed that month? Internet posters ("my boat is wonderful, and btw for sale")? Internet sites with sponsorship? At least, it seems to me, Pascoe was...

    I quit lurking...

Pray tell, where do you come by your superior insight into what is "typical for the brand"? Surveyed more boats than Pascoe? Seems a very unfair shot to me. Pascoe certainly had strong opinions, but borne of genuine experience.

A scary night on the water last night...

Think so? Go look at a thread named "Anchor Light Regulations" on the sister site (I don't know how to link it).

    Automatic Fire Suppression for Diesels?

If you are unlucky enough to have a runaway engine at the same time as an engine room fire, your number is up and accept your fate with as much grace as possible.

    Automatic Fire Suppression for Diesels?

In a recent thread on the same topic on the sister site, there was concern that a running engine might ingest and exhaust the halon before it could extinguish the fire. So, a sequence: 1. Alarm 2. Shut down engine, exhaust fan and fuel supply. 3. Halon (or its successor), to snuff the flames...

Just got the Trawler... Now what do I need to buy???

You need one of everything, and a spare for each one. Keep that up until the money runs out.

A scary night on the water last night...

We used to go to the July 4th fireworks by boat. It was nice to be right under the shells. But we stopped, as it was just too dangerous. I don't drink, but have determined (using unscientific methods) that 100% of other boaters do. Aquapalooza got cancelled in my area (everywhere?) due to...

A scary night on the water last night...

Sailboats tack; it's what they do. My takeaway from all this is not to pleasure cruise at night with a bunch of people on board.

    How Many Anchors?

Do anchor manufacturers have a secret formula they use to determine the correct size, or have they done loads of testing they're not talking about? When all the new generation anchor folks came up with their designs, how do you suppose they came up with their sizing charts? Best guess? Or are...

    How Many Anchors?

1/4" nylon "might" be strong enough, but how quickly would it chafe through if it wraps around a rock.

    Boat search for the Loop

Some people think you should only buy insurance if you think you'll come out ahead. Not me, I hope I never need the coverage I have. Most people never have big claims. Sure, that's why insurance companies make money. But every once in a while, insurance keeps you from losing everything...

Has there been any mention of retractable thrusters? Side Power and others make them.

    Da(m)nforth anchor!

There have been threads (maybe on cruisersforum) on rigging methods and devices that can be used to get a retrieval line to the "heel" of the anchor. I might go back and have a look at those.

    Articulated Bow Roller

Looks like the bow pulpit handrail would be the longest "protrusion" even if the anchor were horizontal.
