    Wifi boosters - why not?

Here is a short video from Jeff Cote, our PNW and BC electrical/electronics guru. He has set up a Q&A providing short over view answers to electrical and electronic concerns. He has ceased writing for Pacific Yachting, I'm guessing he thinks he can hit a wider audience with his short Q&A...

    Power

In my world, 50 amps is a lot. Having your power trip is actually a blessing in disguise, I've done so on my boat 7 times since last August. You are forced into thinking about power management even though you don't want to. I find when I am with new boat owners (newer to boating in general)...

Hello from a lost noob on Vancouver Island

My suggestion is budget $80,000 for the boat and the remaining $20,000 for updating and repairs that will pop up quickly if they don't already exist. You can get something decent for $80,000.

I am not clear, is this a rant over $35 a year?

    We got waked...

My boat on plane throws less of a wake than slowing down and plowing the water. The problem is that when on plane on a smaller wake footprint, to the other boats who aren't aware of this phenomena you appear rude. But if I slow down my wake is actually worse.

Trawler VS Express (Space vs Speed)?

My take is, if you are retired, and have plenty of time, then a 6-10 knot speed in pretty much all you need. If you are still working, and need to cram a lot of travel into a small time period (like a weekend) you need speed to do that. I'd almost reverse this comment. I'm 73 and there is a...

Vancouver boat show seminars - virtual and free

From February 24 through to 27, the Vancouver International Boat show will be on, virtually on and its free to register. And with registration comes the seminars. (There is a limit of 500 for each seminar so arrive early for the topic you want to watch). I was going to list them, but they...

MFD simulators or "live" demos anywhere?

Here's a tutorial on the Garmin 8612, I have the same thing only bigger - the 8616. There are no buttons to twist, its a touch screen. You can however buy a touch pad, kind of like a tv remote to interphase with the 86XX series. I thought I would want a touchpad but after using my Garmin MFD...

One of my friends found this online

but my second thought was, way too fast, look at that wake against the seawall. I'm guessing the boat was cruising at around 10 knots. There were no boats present to be disturbed by the wake and only man made sea wall so the wake created would have done no damage.

Trawler VS Express (Space vs Speed)?

You are coming to a trawler forum and asking about speed, the majority answer will be no surprise. Go to a sailing forum and ask about power versus sail, you can guess the answer. Above some one said that speed is well suited for local waters and I agree with that more because of the cost of...

    Wifi boosters - why not?

So I'll link to a product below that is a wifi booster, why can't we just use one of these at a marina to boost a signal. In an advert video, this product claims to automatically connect, so does that mean no password requirements, etc? Obviously if boosting wifi were this easy and cheap we'd...

    Vashon 23

Why not consider a McGregor, not a true sailboat but with a decent outboard, they can go like stink, and when you want to go slower, put the sail up. The are trailerable. Here is a 26 MacGregor for sale in New York, just providing an example, I know you are in Alaska. This boat is 2001, and is...

    2006 Mainship 34T Dinghy/RIB Recommendation

If you are old and getting older, unlike me, Seawise davits - if you have the bucks - is the way to go. I really don't want to be struggling with a motor attaching it to the dinghy. If you are big money blessed get the electric Seawise system, video below: See video showing you how to operate...

Boat sinks after hitting tug rope

The flaw in the diagram above of a tug towing and lights at night is the assumption, at least along coastal BC, that the lights actually work or are so dim as to be functionally dead. I spent years sailboating in the dark around Vancouver, Howe Sound and from Point Roberts over to the San Juan...

    3900 optimal speed

The charter boat is moored in Comox at the same marina as my boat. In fact this boat is roughly ten boats away from mine. I've looked at this boat from the exterior only but I liked the lines. Side note. I haven't been able to use my boat for the last 6 weeks as dredging was being carried...

Raza Island Cruise - February 2021

I watched your video last night, I have subscribed. I like that you are cruising off season. While boats have canvass set up all around them for weather protection as it isn't the boating season, you are out there proving them wrong. One suggestion. If you can somehow show on a chart or on...

I haven't read all the responses. I will give you my ideal boat which amazingly enough... lol ..., just happens to resemble my boat. Be aware I just finished a multi-hundred thousand refit. So I will just describe - TO ME - the perfect PNW and coastal BC boat. 1. The boat has hydronic...
